Traditional Canned Fish

Conserveira Arade makes traditional canned fish from mackerel, tuna, sardines and horse mackerel, using vegetables from the Algarve, and preserves it in glass jars. The product range may change. If you are looking for a particular variety, check in advance whether it is currently available.

Local History on the Rio Arade

The name Parchal appears to derive from Parchel or Praxel; locally, the place was previously also known as Aldeia dos Cucos. The two references relate to different historical questions: Parchel and Praxel are possible origins of the place name, while Aldeia dos Cucos is an earlier local name.

The history of the landscape is also connected with the Rio Arade. In Parchal’s early days, the river’s tides repeatedly reached its lands. Parchal is also home to the Porto de Pesca do Rio Arade.

Park, Church and History in the Surrounding Area

At Parque Urbano do Parchal, the central lake helps promote biodiversity and create habitats for native species. The Parque Urbano do Parchal project also includes a 1,500-metre cross-country running course, prepared for official competitions. The lake and course have distinct purposes: habitats for native species and a facility designed for competitions.

The parish church of Parchal dates from the late 20th century. The Feast of São Francisco de Assis is associated with the church and falls on the second weekend in July. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the current dates.

The ruined complex of São Francisco de Praxel, also known as São Francisco de Praxal, is in the vicinity of Parchal, not in the town centre. It consists of the remains of a Franciscan monastery founded in the early 17th century. The local connection and the monastery’s history offer two distinct points of reference: its location in the vicinity of Parchal and the early history of the building.

Festival da Sardinha and the History of Fishing

The reenactment at Festival da Sardinha recalls the former fish auction and the work of purse-seine fishing. Since 2019, it has been organised by Município de Portimão through Museu de Portimão. A boat trip aboard a Portisub boat was also planned for the 2026 edition: the route was to run from Porto de Pesca do Rio Arade in Parchal to Cais Gil Eanes in Portimão. Departure was scheduled for 09:00 from Docapesca on the south bank of the Rio Arade in Parchal; accredited media were asked to arrive by 08:30. This particular view from the boat was reserved for accredited media and was not a general visitor trip.
