An almost unbroken, highly varied line of cliffs defines Lagoa’s coastline, usually dropping steeply to the ocean. The part of Lagoa located predominantly on the Atlantic coast stretches for about 17 kilometres; to the south, Lagoa borders the Atlantic. Coastal trails offer different ways to experience this landscape: they follow striking rock formations or connect beaches and viewpoints.

Coastal Trails and Rock Landscapes

The 6-kilometre Caminho dos Promontórios runs between Praia do Molhe at the mouth of the Arade and Praia do Paraíso near Carvoeiro. Signs along the trail cover coastal geology, lithology and geomorphology, marine ecosystems and coastal vegetation. The area’s earlier human settlement is also among the topics. The trail thus connects the landscape with its natural and human history.

Sete Vales Suspensos is a 5.7-kilometre nature trail between Praia de Vale Centeanes and Praia da Marinha. The stated route is 300 metres shorter than the Caminho dos Promontórios; the endpoints and the topics described are different. So when considering both trails, you can take into account not only their lengths but also their respective beach destinations and their focus on coastal geology or nature.

At Algar Seco, ochre-coloured limestone rocks form a labyrinth, heavily shaped by rainwater and the action of the sea. The route there includes about 600 metres of boardwalk. It offers views of the sea as well as glimpses of the cliffs’ Mediterranean vegetation and the diversity of coastal wildlife. At Praia da Marinha, a long flight of steps leads down from the clifftop viewpoint to the beach. It is worth taking this specific access route into account when planning a beach visit.

Coastal formations can also be discovered from the water: fishing boats at Praia do Carvoeiro run coastal excursions to nearby caves and algars. Around Praia de Benagil, boat trips offer the chance to discover beaches that are inaccessible by land. Pedra da Torre is a dive site in the municipality of Lagoa; conditions and providers may vary. Light boats are available for hire at Praia dos Caneiros, although availability may also vary.

Wetlands, Mills and Architectural History

Sítio das Fontes reveals another side of the landscape. Its defining features include marshes and wetlands, scrubland and a small, temporary lagoon. There are also abandoned agricultural areas, bodies of water and watercourses. Together, they illustrate various elements of Mediterranean landscapes. The area has traditionally been used for leisure activities and contact with nature. It also includes two historic watermills; the date of at least one mill is documented in a 15th-century book.

The former São José Convent, now Centro Cultural – Convento de S. José, probably dates back to the 17th century. Two permanent exhibitions are devoted to the history of the building; the Roda dos Expostos is also kept there. Visitors can get information and tickets at reception. The shop sells local handicrafts and food products. Lagoa also offers examples of different craft traditions: miniatures of typical Algarve carts and colourful fishing boats, as well as basketry using the Empreita technique.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz, Matriz de Lagoa, was already in existence before 1755. It was renovated in the neoclassical style and consecrated in September 1814. Among its documented features is an illuminated parchment leaf from a 13th-century hymn book. The chapel at Forte e Capela de Nossa Senhora da Rocha has an octagonal dome and, in the narthex, a Visigothic capital. Torre da Lapa, known as Torre da Marinha, also tells the story of the coast’s architecture: the solid circular structure, built of plastered stone masonry with lime mortar, stands on a secluded cliff east of the mouth of the Arade, near Ferragudo.

Regional Cuisine and Events

Traditional dishes from Lagoa include grilled sardines, fish soup, cataplana, snail stew and oven-baked octopus. Conserveira Arade produces artisanal canned fish from mackerel, tuna, sardines and horse mackerel, as well as vegetables from the Algarve. Factory visits are possible subject to availability and advance booking.

Those looking to focus on sweets and regional products can sample cakes, sweets, preserves and honey at the annual Mostra do Doce Conventual, held in July at Convento de São José. Traditional artisan drinks such as medronho schnapps are also offered. Carvoeiro Black & White takes place in June and includes music, street entertainment and artistic performances. The Feira de Antiguidades e Velharias takes place on the fourth Sunday of every month at Parque Municipal de Feiras e Exposições de Lagoa. The park covers about 50,000 square metres and has more than 800 adaptable spaces for various fairs and major cultural events. FATACIL is also held there in the second half of August. Confirm the dates and current programme before visiting.

Cultural Programme and Travel Planning

Auditório Carlos do Carmo offers cultural programmes organised by the municipality, including music, dance and theatre, as well as conferences, training courses and temporary exhibitions. It has 298 seats, including three adapted seats for people with reduced mobility. Information and tickets are available at reception.
