Church and local history, along with artisanal sausage-making, are at the heart of Aldeia Dos Marmelos; for some exercise, take a hike in the municipality of Alandroal. These themes appeal to different travel interests and raise different planning questions: What does the church reveal about its history, how are the sausages made, and how much time does the trail take? A visit to the Salsicharia was possible by prior arrangement; confirm the visit and its details before travelling.

Church and Historical Layers

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Aldeia Dos Marmelos was already a curado, a church parish, in 1534. The date therefore relates to its ecclesiastical status. The surviving church is a remnant of a later alteration; it was founded on crown land then called Vil Nova. These are distinct reference points in the history of the village: its early ecclesiastical status and its later architectural alteration.

Inside the church there is also a vertical marble sundial with Arabic numerals and an iron gnomon. A gnomon is the shadow-casting pointer of a sundial; together with the numbered scale, it makes it possible to tell the time from the sun's position. The sundial adds a concrete example of historical timekeeping to the church's history. This gives visitors two distinct aspects to consider: the church's parish history and a single object with its own form and function.

Sausage-Making and Visits

The Salsicharia de Francisco Grazina Raínho makes artisanal sausages in Aldeia Dos Marmelos from white and black pork and smokes them over wood. Its range includes six varieties: linguiça, farinheira, morcela, painho, paio and cacholeira. The production method and varieties give food enthusiasts specific points of reference for learning more about the local sausages.

During a visit arranged in advance, visitors could hear the RaĂnho couple explain the different varieties and taste them. Before travelling, confirm the product details and check whether a visit can be arranged.

Hiking in the Municipality of Alandroal

The Pedra Alçada hiking trail starts and ends at the Junta de Freguesia de Santiago Maior. It runs through the municipality of Alandroal along trails and rural roads, is 9 km long and takes about three hours; it is of moderate difficulty. Hiking is recommended all year round. The route leads to one of the municipality's largest megalithic monuments and offers a glimpse into prehistory.

At around three hours, the hike should be planned as a longer activity. Allow extra time for travel to and from the trail in addition to the stated duration, and check current trail conditions before setting out. This makes it a different focus from the church-related themes: here, the distance, time required and megalithic destination take centre stage, while the church section focuses on parish and architectural history.
