There are various ways to experience Mourão and its surroundings during a stay: fortified heritage, Baroque church art, religious traditions and the Alqueva. There is also the official PR1 walking trail and the Praia Fluvial by the reservoir. You can balance cultural experiences and time by the water according to your interests.
Castle and Vistas
Castelo de Mourão is classified as an “Imóvel de Interesse Público” (Property of Public Interest). Its layout is somewhat irregular and trapezoidal; towers defend the complex and are linked by a battlement walk. From the castle, you can look south towards the town of Mourão and north towards the water landscape of the Guadiana River, dammed by the Alqueva. The two directions offer different views of the area: Mourão itself to the south, and the expansive waterscape to the north.
Church Art and Local History
Construction of the present-day Igreja da Misericórdia began in the first half of the 18th century. As early as 1758, the church was mentioned in the Memórias Paroquiais as a “good chapel”. Its Baroque decoration includes gilded woodcarving on the altarpieces. The pulpit, made of white marble, dates from 1719, while the year 1743 is engraved on the portal. These different dates refer to individual features of the church and offer several specific points of reference in its history.
Together with the adjacent Igreja de S. Francisco, the Igreja da Misericórdia forms the monumental end of Praça da República. A more recent arch connects the two churches. Those interested in religious architecture will find not only individual decorative details here, but also an ensemble whose connection and urban impact are part of the square.
Traditions and Festivities
According to the municipality, devotion to Nossa Senhora das Candeias in Mourão dates back to around 1316, during the reign of D. Dinis. The annual Festas em Honra de Nossa Senhora das Candeias include a procession through Mourão on 2 February. The exact programme may vary from year to year. If you are planning to travel specifically for the procession, check the programme for your travel year.
Walking Trail and Beach on the Alqueva
PR1 – Pelo Património Vivo de Mourão is an official walking trail in Mourão. It is approximately 8.3 kilometres long and has a low difficulty level. The route also links rural and urban areas. These features make it possible to consider the trail as an option in its own right, alongside a stay in town focused more on churches and architectural history.
Praia Fluvial de Mourão is on the Alqueva reservoir and has a sandy beach approximately 320 metres long. Swimming is supervised along 100 metres of the beach; lifeguard cover is seasonal. If this is important for your plans, check the supervision period in advance. The two activities can thus be considered according to different interests: the PR1 is defined by its length, difficulty level and the transition between rural and urban areas, while Praia Fluvial offers a beach by the reservoir with seasonal supervision.
