Bell craft, historic buildings and activities with clearly defined seasons shape what Alcáçovas has to offer. If you are considering the town as a place to stay, you can weigh its cultural history, events, swimming and excursions into the surrounding area according to your interests.
Chocalhos: a craft with a history
Alcáçovas is considered Portugal’s most important centre for making chocalhos, traditional livestock bells. The first documented reference to their production in the town dates from the 19th century. A document published by João Rosa is regarded as the charter that officially established the profession here. Around 1890, 20 bell makers worked in ten workshops in Alcáçovas. On 1 December 2015, the making of chocalhos was added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
The Museu do Chocalho collection comprises more than 5,800 bells. The Museu Rural da Casa do Povo de Alcáçovas, meanwhile, focuses on another aspect of everyday life: its folk art presents rural life, particularly between 1940 and 1960. Together, the two collections offer different insights—one into a craft that defines the town, the other into rural life during a specific period.
Paço dos Henriques and its architecture
Paço dos Henriques is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público, a Portuguese cultural asset of public interest. The building is associated with the signing of the Treaty of Alcáçovas–Toledo and the Treaty of Terçarias de Moura on 4 September 1479. Today, the Paço is a public space with exhibition rooms and tourism and cultural projects. Since 4 September 2021, it has housed the permanent exhibition “Paço dos Henriques: História e Memória”. Check opening arrangements before visiting.
The architectural ensemble includes the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Jardim das Conchas. Their design combines Embrechado patterns with around 26 types of shells, as well as tile and glass elements. The watercourse is also part of the grounds: it runs from the fountain, through the aqueduct, to the basin. The chapel and garden offer a different perspective on the cultural heritage from the Paço’s architectural history.
Churches and buildings in town
The Igreja Matriz do Salvador has a rectangular floor plan and three naves. Among its eight chapels is one that served as the pantheon of the Henriques de Trastâmara, lords and overlords of the Vila de Alcáçovas. The chancel features a stone coffered barrel vault, alongside polychrome tiled surfaces and a Mannerist high altar with gilded and polychrome decoration.
Other details add smaller-scale architectural accents: the Torre do Relógio is a two-storey building of rough masonry, with a square floor plan and two cast-bronze bells. The Coreto at Largo Alexandre Herculano was inaugurated on 29 September 1929. Together with the larger religious and garden complexes, it illustrates the variety of historic architectural styles in Alcáçovas.
Events and seasonal activities
The annual Feira brings together Cante and Fado traditions, Arte Chocalheira and pottery, alongside crafts, commerce and gastronomy. The programme also includes concerts, exhibitions, equestrian and bullfighting activities, sports and other entertainment; individual events may vary from one edition to another. The Semana Cultural takes place in June. Its programme includes popular music, Cante Alentejano, talks, food stalls, crafts, sports activities and exhibitions. It is organised by the Junta de Freguesia in collaboration with the municipality of Viana do Alentejo and with support from local associations.
The options at the Piscinas Municipais also vary by season. During the winter season, from October to May, regular water activities are offered for different age groups. During the swimming season, from June to September, three pools for different age groups are open to the public. If swimming is an important part of your stay, it is worth checking the specific operating information for your planned dates.
Green spaces and excursions into the surrounding area
The Parque de Merendas de Vale Tanques is located beside a body of water where numerous migratory bird species can be observed. The site also has facilities intended to improve visitors’ comfort. For a walking option, there is the Rota do Chocalho, a trail created by the Junta de Freguesia de Alcáçovas. Check whether the route is available before setting out.
North of the town, on the Serra de Alcáçovas, lies the Convento de N.ª Sr.ª da Esperança, about three kilometres away. The nearby Fonte Santa can be reached via paths through densely vegetated terrain; it is known for the medicinal properties of its water. Alcáçovas is connected by road, including via the N257. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether your priorities are the town’s buildings, seasonal activities or excursions into the surrounding area.
