A quiet lake, the bends of the Zêzere and a distinctive food culture shape the discoveries awaiting you in Pampilhosa Da Serra. The landscape and cultural heritage reveal themselves in many different details: along riverbanks, on trails, in historic buildings and in regional recipes. When choosing accommodation, you can be guided by what interests you most about your trip.
Waterscapes with Distinctive Features
Praia de Santa Luzia, at the Barragem de Santa Luzia, is surrounded by rock formations and green hills. The lake’s calm waters are suitable for boating. During the summer season, Praia de Santa Luzia also has a floating pool that allows for safer swimming. Check the latest opening dates before your trip.
You’ll find a different kind of riverside landscape at Praia Fluvial da Pampilhosa da Serra: it lies on the Rio Unhais and is surrounded by extensive green spaces on both riverbanks. Alongside the lake at the Barragem, a river and its verdant banks take centre stage as a distinct landscape.
Meanders, Woodland Communities and Rock
Miradouro Natural dos Meandros do Zêzere, in the Freguesia of Portela do Fojo, offers views over the Zêzere Valley. The valley’s deeply incised course and pronounced curves were formed by the river’s meandering. The viewpoint brings together a sweeping view of the valley and a clearly visible geological feature: the bends formed by the river along its course.
The plant life adds its own distinctive feature. In Fajão, the Azereiro forms an exceptionally rare woodland community with extensive stands of holm and cork oaks, as well as oaks and chestnuts. Its uniqueness lies in this combination of different tree species, not in any single tree alone. A little off the path from Fajão, you’ll also find Igreja ou Capela dos Mouros, a cave carved into the rock face.
Trails for Different Discoveries
Caminho do Xisto de Pessegueiro is a circular hiking trail approximately 3.6 km long. It follows both banks of the Ribeira da Loisa and starts at Praia Fluvial do Pessegueiro. Another linear trail begins at the river bathing area of the Barragem de Santa Luzia and heads towards the dam wall of the same Barragem.
If you prefer to get around on two wheels, Centro de BTT de Pampilhosa da Serra offers a signposted cycling network approximately 122 km long, with four difficulty levels. It differs from the individual circular hiking trail in both its scope and the way you travel: here, the focus is on multiple cycling trails and varying levels of difficulty. The approximate total distance and the designated levels give you a concrete guide when choosing a route.
Historical Traces and Regional Culture
On 20 October 1513, Pampilhosa Da Serra received a new charter from King Manuel I, granting municipal autonomy and freedom. The town’s architectural history also includes the present-day Igreja Matriz de Pampilhosa da Serra: it was built between 1908 and 1911 and extensively restored in 1997.
The building that houses Museu Municipal de Pampilhosa da Serra dates from the 18th century and is representative of late 18th-century civil architecture in the local and regional context. Its collection is predominantly ethnographic and is divided into different sections that explore the area from various perspectives. Janeiro de Baixo is also home to a specific piece of historical and ethnographic heritage: the “tronco de ferrar,” where animals were shod.
Typical Products from Pampilhosa da Serra
Maranho is a typical regional fresh sausage. It is prepared in a goat’s stomach and filled with goat meat, some smoked products, rice and aromatic herbs, with savory playing a particularly important role. Filhó Espichada is a traditional product from the Concelho de Pampilhosa da Serra. Its ingredients include aguardente, olive oil, orange, eggs, flour and sugar. These two traditions reveal different sides of the regional cuisine: a stuffed fresh sausage on the one hand, and a sweet treat with its own distinctive combination of ingredients on the other.
