Where the river meets the Atlantic

Figueira da Foz lies where the Mondego flows into the Atlantic. Praia do Cabedelo is south of the estuary, also within Figueira da Foz. Wooden boardwalks wind through the surrounding dunes and provide access to the beach. Here, the coastal landscape and outdoor activities go hand in hand, so the beach is more than just a backdrop: surfing, kitesurfing and bodyboarding are all possible at Praia do Cabedelo. Several schools cater to visitors who want to learn one of these sports. If you want to include water sports in your trip, you can choose between three specific activities and decide whether you want to get out on the water yourself or learn a sport.

Salt landscapes and paths along the Mondego

The PR6 FIG – Rota das Salinas offers a different perspective on the area. This 4.6-kilometre circular route runs through the Mondego Estuary between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds, within a Ramsar wetland. The route combines a clearly defined path with a landscape where salt production and fish farming are visible side by side. A visit to the Núcleo Museológico do Sal includes the interpretation centre, the salt storehouse, the Marinha do Corredor da Cobra salt pan, the Pedarium and a walking path. The museum celebrates salt production in Figueira da Foz as a living activity connected to the landscape and the sea salt produced there. You can explore the subject both along the circular route and through the different parts of the museum visit.

Local cuisine also offers a distinctive way to experience the character of the place: papas de moado is a traditional dessert from Figueira da Foz. It is a porridge made from flour, blood and sugar. This unusual combination of ingredients sets the dish apart from the themes of coast and salt, adding a local food culture to consider as you explore the region.

Walls, towers and cultural heritage

The history of the coast can be seen in various surviving fortifications. Forte de Santa Catarina was an essential part of the defence system for the harbour and bay of Figueira da Foz and Buarcos. Fortaleza de Buarcos preserves significant sections of its original walls and towers, and is often included in tourist walking tours and local cultural events. At Torre de Redondos in Buarcos, you can see the surviving corner section of a medieval fortress with a watchtower. It probably belonged to a group of coastal watchtowers intended to protect the anchorage in Buarcos Bay. Fortim de Palheiros, meanwhile, survives as a circular wall with square openings designed to accommodate artillery. Together, these structures illustrate different forms of fortified coastal history, from walls and towers to an individual surviving fragment of a fortress.

A different perspective on cultural heritage can be found at Casa do Paço. D. João de Melo, Bishop-Count of Coimbra, had it built between 1690 and 1704. Four rooms on the upper floor contain around 6,700 Dutch tiles in the Delft style; the building is classified as a cultural asset worthy of protection. Igreja do Antigo Convento de Santo António has held the same classification since 1978. Its features include carved wooden altarpieces, Mannerist paintings in the high choir and sculptures dating from the 16th to the 18th century. These spaces show how architecture, furnishings and handcrafted details can each shape a visit in different ways.

The permanent collections at Museu Municipal Dr. Santos Rocha range from religious and contemporary art to numismatics, Indo-Portuguese furniture, ethnography, weapons and archaeology. The museum also has themed sections on the sea and salt production. Núcleo Museológico do Mar focuses on topics such as traditional fishing techniques, cod fishing, clothing and customs, natural heritage and local history. It includes a space for a permanent exhibition, a documentation centre with a library and a laboratory for experimental sciences. The Querer Saber section is dedicated to promoting scientific culture and environmental education.

In 2026, a programme of guided visits to Palácio Sotto Maior ran from June to September; during this period, the building was open from Tuesday to Sunday. Check dates and availability when planning your visit.

Geological history and forest trails

At the cliffs of Cabo Mondego, Europe’s largest Jurassic outcrop is exposed. It is between 185 and 140 million years old. This geological timescale offers a different perspective from the walls, towers and collections: here, the focus is on the history of the Earth, not architectural or art history. Parque Florestal da Serra da Boa Viagem, in turn, offers forest roads, forestry tracks, and walking and cycling trails. If you want to make nature and outdoor activities your focus, these are distinct options that differ from the water sports at Cabedelo. For orientation within the municipality, the A8 and A17 motorways also cross the municipality of Figueira da Foz.
