Traditional salt production, the parish church of Lavos and Praia da Costa de Lavos offer different perspectives on the area: heritage, working traditions and coastal landscape. When planning a stay, you can therefore choose between sacred art, salt-pan culture and the surf. The PR6 Rota das Salinas also runs through the salt-pan landscape along the Mondego.
Salt production throughout the year
Figueira da Foz sea salt is produced entirely by hand in the municipality of Lavos, using traditional techniques. The work follows an annual rhythm: the salt pans are cleaned and prepared in April and May, and salt is produced from June to September. This makes it easy to distinguish the preparation period from the harvest season over the course of the year. The salt tradition complements the architectural and art history of Lavos with a craft process whose individual stages take place in specific months.
The history of salt at the museum
The Núcleo Museológico do Sal opened on 17 August 2007 to interpret, promote and share evidence of the centuries-old relationship between people and the salt-pan area of the municipality of Figueira da Foz. Its programme covers five themes: what salt is, salt in nature, the history of salt in Portugal, salt technology and the production cycle in Figueira da Foz, and salt pans and nature conservation. The themes thus range from the basics and the natural world to history, production and the protection of the salt-pan landscape. This places the salt tradition in both its cultural and historical context and in relation to nature and conservation.
Parish church and art history
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is the parish church of Lavos and is also known as Igreja de Santa Luzia. It is classified as a Monument of Public Interest (MIP). Its history is linked to the relocation of the original settlement: it was situated closer to the sea, but natural factors made it necessary to move. The present-day parish church was built afterwards, in the 18th century. Inside, it features gilded and polychrome woodcarving characteristic of the Coimbra Rococo style. Polychrome means multicoloured; together with the gilding, this is a distinctive feature of the interior.
Salt pans route and wetland
The PR6 Rota das Salinas is a 4.6-kilometre circular route through the Mondego estuary. It passes between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds. The wetland is designated a Ramsar site because of its ecological characteristics. The route therefore offers another perspective on salt: here, the landscape of salt pans and fish-farming ponds takes centre stage, alongside the annual work carried out in the salt pans. Its circular layout and stated distance describe the route without specifying a walking time or difficulty level.
Coast and surf
Praia da Costa de Lavos is located near the small settlement of Costa de Lavos. Surrounded by dunes, the sandy beach has good visitor facilities and easier access for people with reduced mobility. At the same time, strong surf is a defining feature of the beach and makes it suitable for surfing; sea conditions can vary. This clearly distinguishes the coastal focus from Lavos’s cultural themes: here, the surf and beach landscape take centre stage. If you include the beach in your plans, bear in mind that surf conditions can change.
Another local tradition
Seasonal fishing is also part of local tradition. In autumn, the people of Lavos fished in ponds; at low tide during the full moon, they caught eels by hand as well as other fish. Alongside salt production, knowledge of fishing and the tides is therefore part of the traditional local way of life. Salt work and fishing complement the architectural history with two distinct aspects of local life and work.
