Vila Velha De Rodão combines a natural area with several archaeological and cultural-historical perspectives. The Portas de Ródão have been classified as a nature monument since 2009 and are notable for their geological, landscape, archaeological, historical and biological values. Other highlights include a route through the history of the Earth, an exhibition about the first inhabitants of the Tagus Valley, and the history of olive oil production. Nature, the river and cultural history offer different points of focus for planning your trip.
Nature Monument and the History of the Earth
The Rota da Geologia e Arqueologia do Ródão takes visitors on a journey through 500 million years of Earth’s history. One of its highlights is a viewpoint overlooking the Portas de Ródão. Advance registration is required to take part; individual visits are not possible. Visits are led by specialists from Geopark Naturtejo. Confirm your registration and appointment in advance, as the arrangements may change. If you would like to experience geology and archaeology as a guided activity, plan your visit accordingly.
The PR6 - Geologia e Arqueologia Urbanas offers a different kind of route. The circular trail starts next to the CIART and runs mostly through the built-up area of Vila Velha de Ródão. As it is easily accessible by car, some sections can be explored separately. October to June is the recommended period for walking the route. Unlike the registered guided tour of the Rota, the PR6 is a circular trail whose individual sections can be explored separately.
The Tagus as a Focus in Its Own Right
Cais de Vila Velha de Ródão is considered a preferred spot for water sports on the Tagus. Boat trips are available on the Tagus; availability may depend on making arrangements in advance. Water sports at the quay and boat trips on the river are different ways to include the Tagus in your travel plans. If a boat trip is important to you, arrange it well in advance.
Archaeology and Cultural History
The Estação Arqueológica do Enxarrique is an archaeological site attributed to the Middle Paleolithic. It is considered one of the most internationally significant archaeological and paleontological sites. The CIART – Centro de Interpretação de Arte Rupestre do Vale do Tejo – has a permanent exhibition devoted to the various cultural expressions of the first inhabitants of the Tagus Valley and their development. When the CIART reopened in October 2025, a new museographic project was presented to the public. Check the current opening hours and visitor arrangements before your visit.
The Lagar de Varas do Cabeço das Pesqueiras focuses on the steps involved in producing olive oil. The presentation covers methods ranging from early, simple techniques to mechanical systems, documenting historical phases that used human and animal power as well as hydraulic and mechanical processes. This brings the evolution of production into focus, not just the finished oil.
Two different time scales provide context: the Rota spans 500 million years of Earth’s history, while Enxarrique is attributed to the Middle Paleolithic. One is a geological timescale; the other is an archaeological and paleontological site. Together with the exhibition at the CIART and the history of olive oil production, they offer a range of ways to explore natural and cultural history.
