Unhais da Serra lies in the heart of the Serra da Estrela. As a starting point for planning a trip, the town offers more than just one main attraction: hiking trails, a cultural landscape shaped by tradition, and two distinct places to enjoy the water. When looking for suitable accommodation, you can first consider whether your trip will focus mainly on trails, historic working practices, or water experiences. The routes differ not only in name, but also in their format, length, and the stories they tell.

Trails through the Serra da Estrela

The Rota das Termas is a circular hiking trail of moderate difficulty that explores the Serra da Estrela. Its points of interest include Fonte da Saúde, Ribeira da Estrela, Sítio dos Poisos, the Canadas de Unhais, and Ribeira da Alforfa. Its circular route, difficulty level, and named landmarks give it a different profile from a trail whose key planning detail is its length.

The Rota das Canadas de Unhais is 12.3 km long. This makes it possible to assess the route by its specific distance, whereas the Rota das Termas is defined primarily by its circular format and moderate difficulty. Before setting out, check the local signage and the route to the named waypoints.

Heritage between mountain pastures, trade, and bread

The Canadas de Unhais are part of a traditional cultural heritage closely linked to transhumance, connecting the town with the mountain pastures. The Rota das Termas also features regional architectural elements associated with traditional pastoral activities. Two aspects of the cultural landscape are represented here: the relationship with the mountain pastures and traces of pastoral life in the architecture.

The Rota dos Carvoeiros tells another story: it retraces part of the route taken by the inhabitants of this section of the Serra da Estrela to Covilhã, where they sold their produce. A report from July 2024 describes the route as linking Torre in the Serra da Estrela with the parish of Unhais da Serra.

The Rota do Pão e da Serra focuses on the stages of breadmaking: from the grain fields to the mills and community ovens. A local hiking brochure from January 2024 gives the route’s length as approximately 8 km. Together, these routes shed light on different aspects of work in the mountain region: mountain pastures, the journey to sell produce, and breadmaking.

Aquadome and the river bathing area

Aquadome is Portugal’s first mountain spa and combines leisure areas with hydrodynamic swimming pools, thermal facilities, body and facial treatments, massages, and a physiotherapy area. Aquadome’s water is described as containing sodium bicarbonate, carbon dioxide, fluoride, and sulphide; it emerges from the spring at 38°C. The facility brings together a range of thermal and body-care areas in one place.

Another option for enjoying the water is the Praia Fluvial de Unhais da Serra river bathing area. It uses water from the Ribeira de Unhais, a tributary of the Zêzere. This gives visitors a choice of different experiences: the range of facilities at Aquadome or a river bathing area supplied by a named tributary.
