Idanha-A-Nova brings together medieval history, traditional craftsmanship and nature-based leisure. The town lies above the Ponsul River; its castle and the surviving remains of the town walls provide a clear link to its history. There are also cultural sites of different kinds, the making of adufes, and an official network of walking trails. The Barragem Marechal Carmona and the pilgrimage tradition at the nearby Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Almortão add their own distinctive touches. This gives you several themes to choose from for a trip: architectural history, cultural heritage, crafts, walking and relaxation in natural surroundings.

Castle and Architectural History

Idanha-A-Nova grew around a castle built in 1187 by order of Gualdim Pais. Remains of the medieval town walls have survived, and the castle summit offers panoramic views. The Torre Sineira, also known as the Torre do RelĂłgio, is said to have been built using stone from the castle. The Capela da MisericĂłrdia was built in the 16th century; the Igreja Matriz de Idanha-a-Nova was renovated in the mid-16th century and has three naves. The distinction between construction and renovation matters when interpreting these details: one statement describes the building of the chapel, while the other describes a renovation of the parish church.

Culture and Crafts

At the Centro de Artes Tradicionais on Rua de SĂŁo Pedro, the architecture takes centre stage: the picturesque complex comprises three houses. The Centro Cultural Raiano, by contrast, is a specialist, technical and functional reference centre that develops and coordinates research, preservation and interpretation of cultural heritage. It has several exhibition halls and an auditorium with around 260 seats. The contrast is clear: one centres on a group of houses, while the other focuses on cultural heritage work and the spaces that support it.

Crafts can be explored through two further themes. Adufes are made using sheepskin and a wooden frame, following the traditional knowledge passed down by local artisans. The Louceiros neighbourhood has three large communal kilns for firing pottery, which are in good condition. Adufe-making highlights materials and inherited skills, while the kilns demonstrate a communal firing function. Together, they reveal different aspects of the craft culture.

Walking, Water and Tradition

For walking enthusiasts, the PR 1 IDN – Rota dos Abutres is listed on the official network of walking trails. The Estação Náutica Idanha-a-Nova was formally established on 13 December 2024 and is organised as a network of nautical tourism offerings. This differs in scope from the specifically named walking route: one is a networked offering, while the other is a single trail. The Barragem Marechal Carmona is recommended for leisure and relaxation in natural surroundings.

Nearby, the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Almortão is a pilgrimage site. The most popular pilgrimage takes place fifteen days after Easter Sunday; its calendar date varies from year to year. If this tradition is important to your travel plans, use the date of Easter as a guide and check the specific date. The first Feira Raiana is another historical landmark: it took place in Idanha-a-Nova from 12 to 15 May 1994.
