Aldeia do Bispo can be explored through several specific themes: architectural history, archaeological finds and hiking. The Igreja Matriz, the Capela do Espírito Santo and a Cruzeiro dated to 1640 provide clear points of reference for the town’s history. At Lameira Larga, a grave find and Roman remains offer a glimpse into archaeology; a rural path between Aldeia do Bispo and Águas adds a route used by local residents for hiking. You can choose the focus of your stay according to whether you are more interested in historic buildings, archaeological finds or an outdoor activity on foot.

Location and Orientation

Aldeia do Bispo lies on the banks of the Ribeira da Raivosa, seven kilometres from Penamacor. The village is also at a crossroads leading to Águas, Aranhas, Bemposta, Aldeia de João Pires and the municipal seat of Penamacor. These two details provide different points of orientation: the riverbank describes its location by the Ribeira, while the crossroads lists several named destinations. Penamacor appears in both contexts, but in different roles: as the municipal seat at the crossroads and as the reference point for the seven-kilometre distance.

Church, Chapel and Cruzeiro

The Igreja Matriz of Aldeia do Bispo was built in the 17th century and rebuilt in 1910. The Capela do Espírito Santo also dates from the 17th century and has been altered several times; a visit is recommended. At the eastern end of the central square stands a Cruzeiro dated to 1640. These dates do not describe a single building phase: the church’s construction and rebuilding should be distinguished, while the date of the Cruzeiro provides a separate point of reference. The chapel’s repeated alterations also add later changes to its architectural history.

Lameira Larga: Grave Find and Pátera

The Lameira Larga grave was discovered on the outskirts of Aldeia do Bispo on 19 April 1907. The grave find included five silver vessels, three glass objects and two ceramic objects. Roman remains were also found at the Lameira Larga archaeological site; the finds include a hoard that was inside a lead box. The history of the finds thus encompasses different material groups as well as the particular context of the hoard.

The silver Pátera “Pátera com cena do mito de Perseu” from the Lameira Larga hoard is now in the Museu Nacional de Arqueologia. Its decoration depicts a scene from the myth of Perseus: Perseus is about to kill Medusa, with Athena and Hermes shown beside him. The find can therefore be understood not only through its material and archaeological context, but also through the scene depicted. Those interested in archaeology can thus gain a specific insight into an individual object and its mythological scene.

Hiking Between Aldeia do Bispo and Águas

The rural path between Aldeia do Bispo and Águas is used by local residents for hiking. This offers a different focus from the buildings and archaeological finds: here, the emphasis is on using a path between two named places. When planning your visit, you can therefore consider cultural history and hiking as separate interests rather than treating them as a fixed excursion itinerary. The location details thus offer a clear choice between dated buildings and archaeological history on the one hand, and a locally used hiking route on the other.
