Discover Vinhais through its nature, walking trails, cultural heritage and regional cuisine. A good starting point for planning is to consider what you want to focus on during your stay: landscapes and environmental education, archaeological and cultural themes, or local specialities and festivals. The Parque Biológico de Vinhais is about three kilometres from the centre and provides access to several of these themes.

Nature and landscapes around Vinhais

The Parque Biológico de Vinhais is a public facility in the Viveiro Florestal de Prada, located within the Parque Natural de Montesinho. The surrounding vegetation is characterised by forests of Pyrenean oak (Quercus pyrenaica). The ultrabasic geology of the Bragança-Vinhais massif is associated with characteristic flora and individual endemic species. Through environmental education, the park presents natural and cultural aspects of the landscape—from flora, fauna and geography to history, archaeology and ethnography.

The visitor centre Porta de Vinhais, part of the Parque Natural de Montesinho, is also located in Vinhais, at the Casa da Vila. If you are particularly interested in the landscape, you can explore these themes on a range of walking trails, which vary in both length and their stated areas of focus.

Walking trails with different areas of focus

The Trilho do Moinho do Perigo is 4.8 kilometres long. At the entrance to Vinhais, it passes through chestnut and oak groves and by watermills on the Rio Trutas. The 3.2-kilometre PR9 – Trilho do Alto da Ciradelha is a circular trail in the Parque Natural de Montesinho. Its description focuses on observing the local flora and fauna.

A longer option is A Caminho da Ciradelha, a nine-kilometre circular trail that passes the Roman archaeological site of Ciradelha and villages in the Serra da Coroa. The stated distance helps with comparing routes, while the landscapes and cultural themes mentioned indicate what each route highlights. On the PR10 – Percurso das Termas do Tuela, a mosaic of agricultural landscapes alternates with riverside corridors, natural meadows and stands of Pyrenean oak. The trail takes its name from a thermal spring in a small building on the left bank of the Tuela.

Cultural heritage, collections and archaeology

The Centro Cultural Solar dos Condes de Vinhais is housed in the former 18th-century manor of the Counts of Vinhais and has a permanent collection of paintings by António Palolo. The Museu de Arte Sacra is located in the 18th-century Convento de São Francisco. The described route through the interior takes visitors to choirs and churches, as well as the Capela de N.ª Sr.ª das Dores; outside the building, it also includes the Capela da Oração de Jesus no Horto. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

At Lorga de Dine, natural and cultural history come together: the natural karst cave was used by people in the Late Neolithic, the Chalcolithic and the early Iron Age. At the Núcleo Interpretativo da Lorga de Dine, information panels explain the site, and replicas and original archaeological finds are also on display. Seven lime kilns at Lorga de Dine bear witness to production that continued until the 1960s.

Other facilities offer different points of focus: the Centro Interpretativo das Raças Autóctones displays life-size representations of 55 Portuguese animal breeds. The Centro Micológico offers excursions into the surrounding area focused on wild mushrooms and the mycological treasures of the Parque Natural de Montesinho; check current dates if you are planning a specific visit. The Centro Interpretativo do Porco e do Fumeiro presents and preserves knowledge, practices, objects and activities related to pig farming and smoked products.

Buildings also contribute to Vinhais’ cultural character. The Pelourinho de Vinhais is a Manueline pillory and is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. The Centro de Interpretação da Natureza is housed in a stately building in the style of a palace, built above the former defensive walls of the Castelo de Vinhais.

Regional cuisine and events

Vinhais cuisine is based on unadulterated, natural products. The specialities mentioned include Casulas, Milhos, Cuscos and Fumeiro de Vinhais. Alongside landscapes and cultural heritage, regional products are another focus to consider when planning your trip.

In 2026, the XXI Rural Castanea – Festa da Castanha will take place in Vinhais from 23 to 25 October. It celebrates the Castanha Longal chestnut variety, local products, traditions and the identity of Trás-os-Montes. The Feira do Fumeiro takes place every year in February. If you are planning your trip around a specific edition, check the event dates in advance.
