Ferradosa combines a distinctly rural character with local heritage that includes religious buildings, watermills and archaeological remains. The annual festival in honour of Santo Amaro is another highlight. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can focus on architectural and local history, or schedule your stay around the festival in January. The main points of interest are in both Ferradosa and the attached settlement of Picões.
Churches and chapels in Ferradosa
Ferradosa’s architectural heritage includes the Igreja Paroquial de Ferradosa, also known as the Igreja de Santo Amaro, and the Capela de Nossa Senhora das Dores. Both buildings are listed in the municipal architectural heritage inventory published on 18 September 2025. The Capela do Divino EspĂrito Santo in Picões is also part of this heritage; Picões is an attached settlement of Ferradosa.
Watermills as a distinct feature
The inventory published on 18 September 2025 also lists two watermills in Ferradosa: the Moinho do ribeiro do Calvário and the Moinho da ribeira do Vasco. As a type of structure, they differ from the religious buildings; the term watermill refers to a mill powered by water. They thus add a technical aspect to the local heritage, while the church and chapels are religious buildings.
The Santo Amaro festival in January
The festival in honour of Santo Amaro takes place every year on 13 January in the village of Ferradosa, in the União de Freguesias de Ferradosa e Sendim da Serra in the municipality of Alfândega da Fé. The religious programme includes Mass at the Igreja Matriz and a solemn procession through the streets of Ferradosa. In the evening, celebrations continue with a traditional bonfire and a lively Arraial, with dancing and festivities. The festival therefore includes both religious events and evening celebrations. The exact programme may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around 13 January, check that year’s programme and the availability of your preferred accommodation for that period.
Rural character and archaeological history
Ferradosa is located in a distinctly rural and sparsely populated area. At the Freguesia level, agriculture and livestock farming are among the main activities; fertile soils can be found on the slopes of the Sabor River. The rural profile therefore has both a demographic and an economic dimension: the population is sparse, while agriculture and livestock farming are important activities. This offers a clear distinction when choosing your destination compared with a more urban stay.
Another historical point of interest is the significant remains of a Castro-period settlement known as “Castelo dos Picões”. They are located in the Rebentão area, on the right bank of the Sabor, within the Freguesia of Ferradosa. Picões is an attached settlement of this Freguesia; the remains’ name refers to Picões, while their precise location is Rebentão.
