In Guilhofrei, a distinctive circular hiking trail, water activities and architectural history come together. The PR10 passes rural paths, historic traces and natural features; at Praia Fluvial do Carvalho, you can swim, canoe or go stand-up paddleboarding. There are also churches, historic houses and distinctive landscape features. You can get to know the area both through its trails and through its individual architectural and cultural features.
Hiking the PR10
The PR10 VRM – Os Carvalhos do Ermal circular hiking trail is 11 kilometres long and takes about three hours. In Guilhofrei, it runs along the foot of the Serra do Merouço. Along the way are chapels, wayside shrines and the parish church; the route also passes a centuries-old oak, rural paths, historic houses, remains of a medieval paved road, watercourses and several fountains. The route thus combines natural and cultural heritage, without limiting its points of interest to a single type.
One striking point along the way is the oak tree in the village of Ermal, known by the local community as “Carvalha Grossa.” It is dated to the 16th century. The name of the hiking trail, Os Carvalhos do Ermal, thus refers to a prominent natural feature of the area.
The PR10 trailhead can be reached from Vieira do Minho via the EN 304, EM 599 and EM 1406. Then follow the signs to Guilhofrei and drive about one kilometre beyond the dam to Praia Fluvial do Carvalho. As trail signage and road conditions may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting off.
Water and Landscape
At Praia Fluvial do Carvalho, you can swim in the waters of the Albufeira do Ermal. Canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding are also offered there. The Barragem do Ermal is in Guilhofrei, is fed by the Ave River and was built in 1938. The water experience and infrastructure are different aspects of the same landscape: the reservoir shapes the area, while the dam is also a prominent landmark when driving to the PR10 trailhead.
Another landscape feature is the area of Lage Branca. There, rocky terrain forms a steep slope with prominent rock outcrops. Its elevation is close to the 900-metre contour; from there, you can enjoy views of the Albufeira do Ermal and the Serra do GerĂŞs. Lage Branca therefore adds a higher-altitude, rocky landscape character to impressions otherwise shaped more by water and the course of the trail.
Churches and Architectural History
Guilhofrei’s parish church is in Assento and is dedicated to Saint James. Inside the Igreja de Santiago de Guilhofrei are a gilded high altar reredos, a statue of Saint James and a ceiling painting depicting Santiago Mata-Mouros. The altar in the main chapel is Baroque and is considered the richest part of the church. The Capela de S. Silvestre has a different, clearly describable architectural form: it has a rectangular east–west-oriented floor plan, granite masonry and a gabled roof.
Several houses also tell of their former functions. The Casa do Visconde de Guilhofrei dates from the first half of the 19th century and features Brazilian-influenced architecture. The Casa da Cadeia formerly housed the prison of the Couto de Guilhofrei and is now a residence. The Casa do Foral was where the administration of justice for the former municipality of Guilhofrei was carried out. These different buildings represent aristocratic, civic, and former penal and administrative functions.
In Louredo, the Casa da Muda is associated with the historic changing of horses to continue a journey. The Mamoa de Penedo das Penas is also located on Monte de Guilhofrei. This mound-type structure is about 7.5 metres wide, less than one metre high and surrounded by a stone kerb. It has been extensively altered. Together with the historic houses and religious buildings, it shows the variety of architectural traces found in Guilhofrei.
