When choosing Cova for a trip, you can explore the area through a range of cultural and historical themes: the Romanesque architecture of the Igreja de São João da Cova, several chapels with their own dates and associations with remembrance, and the topographical details of Outeiro do Crasto. These points of interest span architecture and religious history as well as the landscape around the Rio Cávado.
Churches and Chapels with Their Own Stories
The Igreja de São João da Cova preserves a significant part of its original Romanesque architecture. The location of the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, by contrast, is clear: it stands on the summit of Monte de Crasto in Cova. Inside, the altarpiece originally came from the Santuário de São Bento da Porta Aberta. The church and the chapel therefore offer different points of interest: the preservation of Romanesque architecture in one case, and the summit location and provenance of a sacred furnishing in the other.
The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Begonha has a distinctive dedication: it is the only chapel in Portugal dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Begonha. A statue of Nossa Senhora da Begonha inside was brought here from the Santuário de Biscaia de Bilbao more than 200 years ago. The construction details also mark different milestones: the chapel dates from 1801, and construction was completed in 1806. Beside the chapel, a milestone marks Via XVII of the Município de Vieira do Minho as part of the “Vias Augustas” project.
At the Capela do Bom Jesus da Paz, remembrance is central: the chapel dates from 1668 and commemorates peace with Castile following the Restoration. This distinguishes the construction details of the Begonha chapel from the connection between a specific year and a historical commemoration at Bom Jesus da Paz.
Landscape and Geographical Features
Outeiro do Crasto is a rocky spur about 330 metres high on the northern slope of the Serra de Cantelães, on the left bank of the Rio Cávado. Its elevation, the slope and the riverbank describe different aspects of the same landscape feature: its approximate height and its position in relation to the mountains and river.
The Freguesia de Cova is also on the left bank of the Rio Cávado. Thanks to its proximity to the Serra do Gerês and the Barragem de Caniçada, it has places of great scenic beauty. These geographical references can be distinguished as follows: Outeiro do Crasto is associated with the northern slope of the Serra de Cantelães; the proximity to Gerês and Caniçada refers to the Freguesia de Cova.
The area offers a range of interests to explore: Romanesque architecture, chapels with specific construction and commemorative connections, and landscape features linked to the river, the slope and regional landmarks. These stories and geographical connections give Cova a distinct profile for a culturally focused trip.
