The Albufeira da Queimadela is an 11-hectare reservoir fed by the River Vizela. Fafe is also known for its Romanesque architecture, museums and rural trails. You can tailor your stay to suit different interests: water and walking trails, cultural history, or both.
Waterscapes and trails
The PR4 Trilho Verde da Marginal circles the reservoir at the Barragem da Queimadela. The route runs through forests, wooded areas and rural paths alongside the clear waters of the River Vizela. There are also short walking trails at the Barragem, where you can go canoeing. Operating conditions may vary, so it is advisable to check them before your visit.
There are more than ten signposted short walking trails in the MunicĂpio de Fafe. Another option is the Grande Rota do PatrimĂłnio e do Ambiente das Terras Altas de Fafe, a 50-kilometre circular walking route. There is also a specific option for cycling: the Percurso Ciclável Eco Sport covers 30 kilometres and can be completed independently or with a guide. The section of the Ecopista de GuimarĂŁes in the MunicĂpio de Fafe runs mostly through rural countryside.
Culture and history in Fafe
The Teatro Cinema de Fafe was built in 1923 and is considered an important cultural and architectural landmark in the city. In Arões, the Igreja Românica de Arões is the only National Monument in the MunicĂpio de Fafe. An inscription on the side portal commemorates the church’s consecration on 22 March 1237. The Castro de Santo OvĂdio was designated an ImĂłvel de Interesse PĂşblico in 1980 and is located about one kilometre from Fafe city centre.
The museums focus on a range of subjects. The Museu das Migrações e das Comunidades is dedicated to researching, preserving and presenting the material and symbolic expressions of migration, particularly the return of Portuguese emigrants. The Museu da Imprensa preserves the typesetting, printing and finishing machinery and equipment of Fafe’s former newspapers, “O Desforço”, founded in 1892, and “Almanaque Ilustrado de Fafe”, founded in 1909. A printing press dating from 1885 is also a notable feature.
The Museu do Rali features a permanent exhibition as well as temporary and travelling exhibitions, including displays about “Fafe e o Rali de Portugal”; 25 rally cars are on show. Another aspect of regional history is presented at the Santa Rita Hydroelectric Museum, a museum of electricity and the first of its kind in Portugal. The Estação Memória is housed in a converted warehouse at the former Fafe railway station. The Guimarães–Fafe railway section was closed in 1986. At the Museu da Palha, visitors can weave a traditional Trança de Repique in the “Entrança tu” area.
Views, parks and cuisine
The Miradouro de SĂŁo Salvador offers panoramic views across the entire MunicĂpio de Fafe, as well as of Monte de Santa Catarina, also known as Penha, in GuimarĂŁes and Monte de Santa QuitĂ©ria in Felgueiras. The viewpoint includes a landscaped recreation park with tables, barbecue grills and a bar with an outdoor terrace. The Miradouro de Santa Marinha is on Monte de Santa Marinha in the Freguesia Freitas and is also known as Baloiço 440 “O Amor Que Nos Une”. The site, surrounded by vegetation and near a chapel dedicated to Santa Marinha, includes a picnic area.
Casa do Penedo is located in the Serras de Fafe and was designed to blend completely into the landscape. Parque da Cidade has walking paths, exercise equipment, an amphitheatre for outdoor events and a children’s playground; themed paintings form an open-air art exhibition there. A culinary speciality is Vitela assada à moda de Fafe, which has been part of Fafe’s cuisine since at least the 19th century.
When looking for a holiday apartment in Fafe, you can start by deciding what you would like to focus on: trails and waterscapes, the history of the city and surrounding towns, or a combination of these themes.
