Vizela combines a strong thermal tradition with historic buildings, trails and views across the valley. Several highlights can help you plan your visit: Caldas de Vizela, the Passadiços, the Santuário de São Bento das Peras and the Bolinhol tradition. Getting there is also straightforward: Vizela has a railway station and is connected to the railway line 11 to Guimarães. If you’re looking for a hotel in Vizela, you can first decide whether thermal baths, scenery, history or an event around 11 July will shape your stay.

Thermal tradition and riverside setting

Caldas de Vizela comprises three thermal establishments and around 50 springs; together, they form Portugal’s largest thermal spa. The water is sulphurous and contains bicarbonate and sodium. Caldas is located beside the river that gives it its name and near Guimarães, which is associated with the origins of Portugal. The thermal tradition is therefore set alongside a regional connection that may also be of interest when planning your trip.

Another historic landmark is the Ponte Velha de Vizela. The medieval bridge replaced an earlier Roman bridge at the same site, on the route between Bracara Augusta and Mérida. The site thus brings together two eras of bridge history and also points to a historic transport link.

Walking trails, valley views and elevation

The Passadiços de Vizela form a linear walking trail approximately 6 km long. The Passadiços are recommended for the route to the Quedas de Água de Requeixos; they follow the bed of the Ribeira de Sá. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between a longer linear trail and the suggested route to the waterfalls. The stated distance describes the trail, not the time it takes to walk it.

Another landscape viewpoint can be found at the Santuário de São Bento das Peras, which stands at an elevation of approximately 410 metres. From there, the panorama stretches across the city of Vizela and the surrounding valley. The sanctuary’s Capela Velha dates back to the 16th century. Here, scenery and architectural history come together in one place, while the Passadiços offer a separate option for walking through the surrounding area.

The festival in honour of S. Bento das Peras, also known as S. Bentinho, takes place every year on 11 July. A walking procession leads from the city to the summit of the mountain of the same name. If you want to plan your trip around this religious festival, take the date into account. The redesign of the Santuário unveiled in 2025 included the construction of car parks and an extension of the footpaths giving access to the Caminho da Vida and the Cista.

Park, recreation and history

Parque das Termas de Vizela was granted Historic Garden status in 2020. The park is home to Campo Municipal de Minigolfe Fonseca e Castro, with an 18-hole course for mini golf and Petergolf. The course is used for national and international competitions, as well as for recreation and entertainment. Thus, historic garden heritage and a clearly defined leisure activity sit side by side in the same park.

Museu dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Vizela opened in May 2017. Items on display include old vehicles and equipment. The Treaty of Tagilde offers another historical connection: it was signed on 10 July 1372, marking the beginning of the formalisation of the Portuguese-British alliance.

Bolinhol and local tradition

Bolinhol has been part of Vizela’s gastronomic heritage for more than a century and was chosen as one of Portugal’s seven sweet wonders. Feira do Bolinhol is one of the initiatives aimed at keeping this speciality alive as a Vizela reference. Visitors interested in local food culture can thus add a specific sweet tradition to their stay, without needing to plan around a particular event date.

Getting there and choosing what to focus on

For rail travel, Vizela’s railway station is the starting point; the city is connected to line 11 to Guimarães via Portugal’s national railway network.
