In Anjos, different traces of rural heritage meet a landscape shaped by the Serra da Cabreira and the Rio Ave. The churches and chapels, the Fojos de lobo and the granite buildings each tell their own story about local history. When choosing Anjos as a destination, it is therefore worth looking both at the specific architectural forms and at the river and mountain landscape.

Churches and Chapels in Anjos

The Igreja Paroquial de Anjos dates from the 18th century and is dedicated to Santa Maria. The parish of Santa Maria dos Anjos, by contrast, has been documented since the 11th century. These provide two distinct historical reference points: the long history of the parish and the later construction date of the church. Its main façade features a Baroque-style pediment with decorative finials and a cross. A bell tower with two bells is attached to the building.

The chapels can also be distinguished by specific features. The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Socorro is located in Souto and has a rectangular floor plan. On its main façade, the year 1850 appears to be inscribed alongside the invocation “Mater.” This cautious reading is part of the detail: the date should not be regarded as a completely certain inscription. Another chapel, the Capela da Sr.ª da Boa Morte, is located in Anjos opposite the cemetery.

Fojos and Their Different Forms

The Fojos de lobo da Cabreira are defensive hunting traps used to catch wolves. The ensemble consists of three separate structures. At each one, walls converge on a pit, forming a V in plan. This basic design can be considered alongside the more precise measurements of the Fojo Novo without treating the structures as identical: its circular pit has a diameter of 6.5 metres. The eastern and western walls are each about 225 metres long; the V-shaped plan opens out in a circular arc.

The Fojo Grande is described using further approximate measurements. Its nearly circular pit lies at an elevation of about 1,100 metres, measures approximately six metres across and is about 3.5 metres deep. As a separate point of tourist interest, the Fojo do Lobo de Anjos is one of the twelve stops on the route through the Serra da Cabreira. Visitors interested in these hunting traps can thus distinguish their shared V-shaped design principle from the differing measurements given for the named structures.

Granite Buildings, Slopes and Water

The Aglomerado Rural de Carude is part of the rural heritage. The ensemble includes houses of ethnographic interest and several stone granite Canastros. The Moinhos de Fundo de Vila also preserve a group of small granite-built watermills. Together with the churches and chapels, these examples show different forms of rural architecture: houses, stone Canastros, mills and religious buildings.

The landscape adds another perspective without conflating the places or subjects involved. Anjos stretches down the southern slope of the Serra da Cabreira. Numerous streams rise here and flow into larger waterways such as the Ribeira de Vilarchão. Praia Fluvial de Anjos is one of the first river beaches downstream from the source of the Rio Ave. Anjos therefore offers a distinct landscape theme encompassing both small streams and their confluences, as well as the course of the Rio Ave.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Two festivals have specific calendar dates that can help with planning. The festival of the Sagrado Coração de Jesus is celebrated on the weekend closest to 15 August. The festival in honour of Santa Luzia takes place every year on 13 December. The dates differ clearly: the first is determined by its proximity to 15 August, while the second falls on a fixed date in December each year.

Whether you are especially interested in churches and chapels, the forms of the Fojos, or granite buildings and the waterside landscape when choosing a destination, Anjos offers several clearly distinct themes around which to plan a stay.
