Two hiking trails offer different experiences in Carreira: the short Ribeiro Queimado circular route passes through a landscape of grazing areas and opportunities to observe nature. The PR2 – Monte do Merouço combines an old mountain path with granite formations and a viewpoint. Goldsmithing, particularly filigree work, is also still closely associated with Sobradelo Da Goma.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Ribeiro Queimado hiking trail starts and ends in the Aldeia de Carreira in Sobradelo Da Goma. On this short loop, you can observe wildlife and plants and see cattle and goats grazing on natural pastures. The PR3 – Ribeiro Queimado passes through the Aldeia Turística de Carreira and along a road lined with farmhouses, a chapel, mills, levadas and ramadas. Opportunities to observe nature and rural structures sit side by side here.

The PR2 – Monte do Merouço also starts in the Aldeia Turística de Carreira. It follows an old mountain path paved with stones and marked by deep ruts made by ox carts. For a stretch of about 150 metres, the trail passes between large granite monoliths. This makes it markedly different from the Ribeiro Queimado circular route: here, the character of the trail is defined by its old route and granite landscape.

The PR2 reaches the Miradouro da Pedra Bolideira. From there, the view takes in the Serras do Carvalho, São Mamede and Cabreira, as well as the Gerês granite massif. Pedra Bolideira is a granite block weighing about 3,000 kilograms, which visitors can try to move with one finger. The PR2 and PR3 both start in the Aldeia Turística de Carreira in the Freguesia Sobradelo Da Goma; together, they are 11 kilometres long. As route information may be updated, it is worth checking the latest trail description before setting out.

Filigree, mills and a church

In Travassos and Sobradelo Da Goma, goldsmithing continues to be distinguished by the filigree technique. Sobradelo Da Goma is considered a “living museum” of this traditional art. The Oficina do Ouro – Filigrana is located in Lugar de Igreja in Sobradelo Da Goma. Filigree therefore offers a distinct cultural highlight alongside the hiking trails and granite landscape.

Churches and mills are also among the specific features of the area. The parish church is named Igreja Paroquial de Sobradelo da Goma (Santa Maria). In Carreira, there is a chapel that belongs to Casa da Capela. The watermill there was restored and was once used to grind grain for making bread. Its former function connects the building with the local bread-making tradition, but does not imply that it is still used for milling today.

Water sports and cuisine

Parque de Lazer do Pontão makes use of the natural landscape of the Freguesia Sobradelo Da Goma. The Albufeira das Andorinhas in the park is equipped for a wide range of water sports activities. This offers a different focus from the trails: visitors looking to prioritise hiking and scenic views will find specific route options, while the Albufeira offers opportunities for water sports.

Carreira also adds a culinary note to the choice of destination. Typical local specialities include feijão solto com arroz, cozido à portuguesa and pão de ló. Trails, filigree tradition, historic structures, water sports and regional cuisine offer different ways to shape a stay, without requiring a single set itinerary.
