Porto Judeu can be explored through very different themes: the volcanic origins of Gruta das Agulhas, the Arcadas do Porto Judeu dive site, and the architectural and festival traditions of the Impérios. For planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these highlights. Along the coast, the focus is on lava, rock formations and activities in the water; the Impérios are about architectural history, façade design and religious festivals.

Volcanic Origins and the Seacoast

Gruta das Agulhas was formed from lava from the eruption of Pico do Refugo, which flowed as far as the sea. Its formation therefore points to a specific volcanic event and the path the lava took to the coast. Arcadas do Porto Judeu offers a different perspective: the dive site is in a small bay near the fishing harbour of Porto Judeu and opposite the Ilhéus das Cabras. There is also a long arch at Arcadas, about seven metres wide. The story of a lava flow and a clearly defined rock formation thus offer two different perspectives on the coastal landscape.

Diving and Snorkelling at Arcadas

The dive site is in a sheltered location with shallow water and weak currents. Arcadas do Porto Judeu is suitable for night dives, underwater photography, introductory dives and snorkelling. These activities range from looking through a camera underwater to snorkelling at the surface. If you would like to include activities at sea in your trip plans, you can use these specific options as a guide; they describe different ways to experience the dive site.

Impérios: Architectural History and Festival Traditions

The Império do Divino Espírito Santo do Porto Judeu de Baixo, also known as Império do Terreiro, was built in 1916. Its façade is distinguished by bright, bold colours inspired by the traditional colours of the parish’s fishing boats. This design is therefore more than just a striking feature of the building: it draws on a local maritime colour tradition. For visitors interested in architecture, the façade offers a concrete starting point for noticing the connection between a religious building and fishing boats.

Another building is the Império do Divino Espírito Santo da Ribeira do Testo, also known as Império da Boca da Ribeira. It was built in Porto Judeu in 1933 and restored in 2000. The two years mark different stages: 1933 is the year it was built, and 2000 the year it was restored. The Império of Ribeira do Testo celebrates its festivals in honour of the Holy Spirit on the Sundays of Pentecost and Trinity. If you would like to plan your trip around these festivals, check the specific dates for your travel year.

Algar do Carvão and a Walking Route on Terceira

Algar do Carvão is a 100-metre-deep volcanic vent. Rainwater seeps into the rock, feeds a clear lake inside and gives rise to silica stalactites and stalagmites. The site is classified as a natural monument by Parque Natural da Terceira and is also a geosite in Geoparque dos Açores. These features make Algar do Carvão a natural attraction with several facets: a volcanic cavity, water inside and mineral formations.

Access to Algar do Carvão is restricted. Check the current access conditions before visiting. On Terceira, a walking route also links the natural monuments of Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre.
