Discover Livramento through its coastal landscape and traces of its history. The PRC 48 SMI – Vinhas de São Caetano circular trail follows the south coast of São Miguel; historic fishing spots and buildings reveal other aspects of the area. The trail is easy to walk and starts and ends in Mata do Café in the parish of Livramento. This lets you choose a focus for your trip: coastal scenery, local traditions or architectural history.

Coastal Trail, Vineyards and Fishing Spots

The PRC 48 SMI – Vinhas de São Caetano runs as a circular trail along the south coast. Along the route, traces of the former vineyard walls of São Caetano have been preserved. They recall the importance of winegrowing in this area until the 19th century and make its agricultural past visible in the landscape.

The history of the Rosto do Cão (Livramento) area goes back further too: in the 17th and 18th centuries, the land between the parish settlement and the sea was covered with vineyards. The surviving wall remains along the trail and this historic connection to the landscape tell different parts of the same regional winegrowing story.

Traditional fishing spots such as Ponta Grossa, Furada and Borralho lie along the coast. They reflect the long-standing connection between the communities of Livramento and São Roque and this area, particularly through recreational fishing. The ruins of Forte de São Caetano are also visible along the coastal trail. The fort was built in the 17th century as part of the coastal defence system.

Buildings and Their History

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Livramento was expanded in the 1960s. At that time, a tower was added on the north side, and the interior was extensively redesigned. Its history therefore also includes significant structural changes from the 20th century. Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Pópulo has a different restoration history: after a long period of decline, it was carefully restored in the 1940s.

The architectural design of Casa de Thomas Hickling is influenced by English architecture of the late 18th century. Solar das Necessidades in Livramento, meanwhile, is a 17th-century building. These buildings point to different periods and architectural influences, and their histories need not be reduced to a single account of the area.

The history of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Livramento also includes a bequest recorded on 2 January 1661: eight alqueires of land near Ermida da Senhora do Livramento were to provide income for masses on feast days. This is a specific historical link between land and religious practice.

Architecture and local history also come together at Solar do Botelho. It is home to an ornate fountain that gave rise to the title “Barão da Fonte Bela”. D. Maria II granted this title to its owner in recognition of his services to constitutional monarchy.

Coastal Scenery or Architectural History?

If you are considering Livramento as a travel destination, its trails and buildings offer different ways to explore the area. The PRC 48 SMI – Vinhas de São Caetano circular trail puts coastal scenery and vineyard walls at the heart of the experience; the historic buildings tell stories of expansions, restorations, architectural influences and past endowments. The fishing spots add another perspective: the communities’ enduring cultural connection to the coast. You can shape your trip around whichever theme interests you most.
