Ribeirinha has several different facets, including a circular walking trail through the town centre, viewpoints on the north coast and historic buildings. When planning your trip, it helps to consider these highlights separately: the trail offers a specific hiking option, the viewpoints draw your attention to different landscapes, and the church and lighthouse tell the story of the area’s buildings and local history. This will help you decide whether exercise, scenery or cultural heritage is most important to your trip.

Circular Trail and Coastal Landscape

The Trilho da Ponta do Cintrão is a municipal circular walking trail that passes through the centre of Ribeirinha. Its shape and route make it a way to combine a walk with taking in the townscape: the trail passes through the heart of the parish and loops back to its starting point. This makes a local walking trail, rather than simply a scenic drive, a focal point for planning your trip.

The Vigia das Baleias offers a different perspective on the coast. From this viewpoint, you can see along the north coast between Capelas and Fenais da Ajuda. Ponta do Cintrão adds a geological dimension to the landscape: it is part of the Fogo Volcanic Complex and was formed by massive flows of trachytic lava (lava domes). The coastal views and the volcanic history are therefore two different ways to experience Ribeirinha’s landscape.

Viewpoints with Different Sights

The Miradouro da Coroa da Mata is located on Estrada Regional 1-1ª in Ribeirinha, at an elevation of 268 metres. From there, you can see Ponta do Cintrão and Lagoa do Fogo. The Miradouro de Santa Iria is also on Regional Road 1-1ª in Ribeirinha, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande; its views reach the Gorreana tea plantations. The Miradouro do Cintrão is in Ribeirinha, in the municipality of Ribeira Grande, and offers a panorama of the north coast of São Miguel.

Each viewpoint offers something different: specific landscape features at Coroa da Mata, tea plantations at Santa Iria and a broad coastal view from the Miradouro do Cintrão. This last viewpoint is easily accessible for people with reduced mobility. As accessibility details can change, please check them before your trip.

Church and Lighthouse: Local History

The Church of Santíssimo Salvador do Mundo was built from 1826 to 1861. Its side aisles, which are 14 metres high, give it cathedral-like proportions. A chapel dedicated to Santíssimo Salvador do Mundo already existed in Ribeirinha in the 16th century. It stood above the stream on the hill of the same name. The former chapel and the church built later mark different stages in local history.

The Farol do Cintrão also combines design and function: its round white tower was built to guide ships along the north coast of São Miguel. The lighthouse opened in 1910, is a tourist attraction and offers views of the sea and coast. Together with the church, it complements the scenery with a focus on buildings and their history.
