Fine sand and a vast beach area define Praia de Esmoriz. Water sports, nature trails and coastal heritage are other highlights. You can tailor your stay to the beach, the landscape or local history.

Beach and water sports

During the bathing season, the beach is used for swimming. If you want swimming to be a regular part of your trip, take this seasonal aspect into account when planning. The bathing season is the relevant time frame if swimming is the deciding factor for your trip.

Another water-based offering is the Barrinha Surf School in Esmoriz, which offers surfing lessons, stand-up paddleboarding, bodyboarding and skimboarding. Several water sports are available, so you can make your preferred activity the starting point for planning your day. If you have a particular discipline in mind, check in advance which lessons are currently available.

Barrinha and birdlife

The Barrinha de Esmoriz, also called Lagoa de Paramos, is a rare medium-sized coastal lagoon between the municipalities of Espinho and Ovar. It is unique of its kind along Portugal’s northern coast. The Barrinha boardwalk is about 6 km long, providing a specific distance to use for planning.

There are 129 bird species regularly present in the Barrinha; a further 33 occur occasionally or rarely. This distinction is more informative for wildlife watching than a single total, because it separates more common occurrences from occasional or rare ones. Future surveys may change the population figures.

Trails and landscape

The Ecopista do Atlântico is 10 km long and connects the beaches of Esmoriz and Furadouro via the Estrada Florestal. Together with the Barrinha boardwalk, which is about 6 km long, it offers a specific comparison of distances: based on the stated routes, the Ecopista is longer, and its two beach destinations are also named.

Parque Ambiental do Buçaquinho opened on 25 April 2013 and covers 24 ha of protected woodland. It has trails for walking and cycling on unpaved or wooden paths. This makes it possible to identify the park by activity and trail surface, while the distances offer a guide to the boardwalk and Ecopista.

Coastal heritage

Tanoaria Josafer is a living cooperage museum with more than 100 years of history. The Palheiros group comprises eight palheiros built in Praia Velha in Esmoriz. The two topics highlight different things: the history of cooperage and a group of eight buildings. Both traditional crafts and built heritage are among the area’s local attractions.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Praia de Esmoriz, you can use these highlights as a guide: seasonal swimming and water sports, nature and trails, or local heritage.
