Świdwin offers two scales for planning a trip: the city’s architectural history and the natural and cultural destinations in the Gmina Świdwin and nearby Oparzno. If you want to include both, you can distinguish the historic sites in the city from excursions into the surrounding area.

Gothic Architecture and Medieval Traces in Świdwin

The Church of St. Mary remains one of the city’s most significant Gothic monuments. The origins of Świdwin Castle date back to the late 13th century. The Stone Gate was built in the mid-14th century by the von Wedel family as one of two entrance gates to Świdwin. These structures convey different aspects of the city’s history: sacred architecture, a castle and former fortifications.

Only a 14-metre section of the medieval city walls remains by the Rega River. It is made of fieldstones and medieval brickwork in the so-called Wendish bond. A hiking trail follows key locations of the fighting between the 1st Polish Army and German units from 4 to 7 March 1945. The route passes through the city of Świdwin and the municipalities of Świdwin, Ostrowice and Brzeżno.

The annual “Bitwa o krowę” (“Battle for the Cow”) is also part of the region’s events calendar. It takes place alternately in Świdwin and Białogard. As the venue changes, it is advisable to check the date for the year of your trip.

Routes and Travel in the Wider Area

The black-marked “Szlak Dziedzictwa Techniki i Architektury” (Technical and Architectural Heritage Trail) runs through the municipalities of Świdwin and Brzeżno. Within Świdwin County, it is 12.7 kilometres long. It complements the city’s history with a look at the municipalities’ technical and architectural heritage.

The regional scale is also important when planning your journey: a major railway line connecting Szczecin and Gdańsk runs through Świdwin County. The route description refers to the county. Check current connections and journey times for your specific trip.

Lakes, Forests and Nearby Oparzno

The Gmina Świdwin lies in the Rega Valley, in the central part of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship and on the so-called Łobez Upland, in the immediate vicinity of the Drawsko Lake District. Forests cover 28 percent of its area. They line the Rega and Mołstowa valleys and also occur in scattered patches across the moraine upland. Lakes and ponds cover 1.7 percent of the municipality’s area and are considered attractive to anglers.

Lake Oparzno, near Oparzno, is the largest lake in the Gmina Świdwin. The “Jezioro czapli” nature trail runs along its shore: it is about 1.5 kilometres long and has seven information boards. One of them covers nesting grey herons and bitterns. It is advisable to check the trail’s current condition before visiting. Wet forest and alder carr habitats occur in the damp, marshy hollows around Lakes Oparzno and Bystrzyno Wielkie and the Rusinowo and Klępczewo peat bogs.

Oparzno lies seven kilometres west of Świdwin. It has a brick church dating from 1729; its churchyard was established in the early 18th century. The village is also home to a naturalistic-eclectic park dating from 1870. In Lekowo, the half-timbered Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, built in 1751, adds to the picture of the region’s architectural history. Its furnishings include a triptych of Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child, dated 1500, a Baroque chandelier from the 18th century, a Renaissance baptismal font and patronal pews from the mid-17th century.

Waterways and Regional Highlights

Lakes Lekowo Duże and Lekowo Małe, near Lekowo, are considered attractive to anglers and tourists because of their abundance of fish and the adjacent parkland and forests. For canoeists, waterways on the Rega, Dębica and Mołstowa rivers are available in Świdwin County. A 147-kilometre lowland canoe trail also starts in Cieszeniewo.

The region’s food culture is also documented historically: a report dated 8 July 2014 describes how participants at “V Rusinowskie Lato z Folklorem” in Rusinowo were able to sample Rusinowo potato fritters and bread made by local residents. This offers a glimpse of an event at the time; it does not provide a current date.

If you are looking for a hotel in Świdwin, it helps to decide on the focus of your trip in advance: would you primarily like to explore the city’s architectural heritage, or also include destinations in the Gmina and nearby Oparzno? This will help you put together a selection of visits that suits your trip.
