Żukowo offers more than just a single building: a medieval oval village layout, Gothic details on the branch church and a blacksmith’s workshop from the early 20th century reveal different historical layers. The village is also located on the edge of the Ina Valley, in surroundings shaped by meadows and farmland.

The oval church village and its early history

Żukowo has preserved a clearly recognisable medieval oval church-village layout, with buildings clustered around a central square. Its distinctive character lies not only in individual historic buildings but also in the layout of the village: the oval shape and the buildings around the square form a cohesive settlement pattern. About half of the historic farmsteads have been preserved. Together, the layout and farmsteads illustrate two scales of the village’s history: the oval pattern as a whole and part of its surviving building stock.

Żukowo was first mentioned in writing in 1237. At that time, the knightly family de Suckow, associated with the Order of St John, had its seat there. This early mention and the family’s seat place Żukowo in a specific historical context in the 13th century.

Gothic details and historic furnishings

The church “Kościół filialny pw. św. Antoniego” preserves Gothic pointed-arch portals and windows; a stone wall encloses the former churchyard. The church also has altar components dating from around 1500 and from 1715. This brings together Gothic architectural forms and two specific dates for the furnishings: the portals and windows describe the building’s architectural character, while the dates refer to parts of the altar.

A later architectural landmark

The surviving blacksmith’s workshop building from the early 20th century stands beside a pond on the western edge of the village. It adds a more recent historical note to the medieval village layout. Żukowo’s historical reference points thus range from its first written mention in 1237, through altar components dating from around 1500 and 1715, to a building from the early 20th century.

Valley edge, river and routes

Żukowo lies on the edge of the Ina Valley, about one kilometre from the river and parallel to its course. The edge of the valley and the riverbank are not the same: the village is not directly on the riverbank. Meadows and farmland surround Żukowo. The municipal road Krapiel–Żukowo–Brudzewice is one of the village’s points of reference; Żukowo lies along this road.

The “Szlak Dziedzictwa Historyczno-Przyrodniczego” passes through Żukowo, among other places. If you plan to follow this route, check its course, signage and current maintenance before setting out. The road and the route are different points of reference: one runs along Żukowo, while the other passes through the village, among other places. The route can therefore be considered as a separate planning point alongside the historic buildings.

Horse riding in winter, too

Żukowo has a stud farm with an indoor riding arena that makes horse riding possible in winter, too. If you are planning a visit or to ride there, check the current options in advance. Alongside the village’s cultural and historical character, this offers another distinct aspect to consider when planning your trip.
