The castle, late Gothic church and red Hetman Stefan Czarniecki Trail offer different points of interest in Pęzino. The buildings provide a glimpse into several eras, while the trail places the town on a longer route between Stargard and Recz. When planning your visit, it is therefore helpful to consider whether architectural history or your choice of route will shape your stay.

Architectural History in Pęzino

Pęzino Castle was built in its original form by the Knights Hospitaller around the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. Its clearly identifiable building phases include the Early and Late Gothic periods, the Late Renaissance and Neo-Gothic. This brings together a medieval origin and several stylistic periods. If you are interested in architectural history, you can distinguish the original construction from the broader stylistic classification, rather than reducing the castle to a single construction date.

The Late Gothic Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary dates from the mid-16th century and was built of fieldstone and brick. Unlike the castle, the church is defined by a clearly named period, a specific timeframe and particular building materials. Together, the two buildings offer different starting points for exploring Pęzino’s cultural history: the castle through the span of its identifiable building phases, and the church through its Late Gothic classification and fieldstone-and-brick construction.

The Red Trail Through Pęzino

The red Hetman Stefan Czarniecki Trail is 62.5 kilometres long and runs from Stargard to Recz, passing through Pęzino. The town is therefore on a longer route between the two stated endpoints. If you include the trail in your plans, take its total length into account and check current trail conditions before setting out. This keeps your choice of route aligned with its actual course and avoids mistaking it for a local circular walk.

Stargard as a Distinct Cultural Context

The wider destination of Stargard adds a distinct urban cultural context. St Mary’s Church and Stargard’s medieval city walls were recognised as a Monument of History by an ordinance of the President of the Republic of Poland dated 17 September 2010. The city walls are among the few examples of medieval urban fortifications in West Pomerania that have survived almost along their entire length, complete with defensive gates and bastions. A museum exhibition in Stargard presents the city’s history from its foundation in the 13th century to the beginning of the 18th century. Fortification architecture and an account of the city’s history can thus be explored side by side, while Pęzino offers its own architectural points of interest in the form of its castle and church.

The Historical Festival “In the Land of the Griffin” is also held in Stargard. It is intended for whole families, history enthusiasts and people who would like to spend an active weekend in June. If the festival affects your choice of dates, check the specific event dates.

For walks in Stargard, the “Stargard – Jewel of Pomerania” circular route passes through the Old Town and is about 3 kilometres long. This is a different type of route from the 62.5-kilometre trail from Stargard to Recz that passes through Pęzino: one is described as a circular walk through the Old Town, the other as a longer connection between two places. Another route option is the red cycling trail “Through the Drumlins of the Stargard Region”, which runs from Stargard through Lipnik, Zieleniewo, Morzyczyn, Grzędzice, Żarowo, Rogowo and Lubowo before returning to Stargard. This lets you combine Stargard’s architectural and urban attractions with a dedicated walking or cycling route, without attributing them to Pęzino’s sights.
