Podewils Castle, the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Lake Zamkowe, the almost circular lake north of the castle, give Krąg a clear focus on architectural history and landscape. If you would like to combine historical details with outdoor trails, you will find several points of interest here: the castle’s construction phases, the church’s furnishings and trails leading to a second forest lake. These cultural and landscape themes can be considered separately as you plan your trip.

Podewils Castle and its park

Podewils Castle was built in the early 15th century by the Podewils family as a former knight’s residence. In 1580, it was demolished down to its foundations and rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The building acquired its final form at the end of the 19th century. This sequence therefore brings together the early knight’s residence, its reconstruction after demolition and a later defining phase of construction.

Before the war, the castle was called the “Flower Castle” because of its beautiful flower gardens. It is surrounded by a 2.6-hectare historic park that extends to the road and the shore of Lake Zamkowe. The lake lies north of the castle and is almost circular. A 16th-century chapel with Baroque furnishings has been preserved in the park.

Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The single-nave, brick Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in 1580 by the owners of the nearby castle in the Baroque-Renaissance style. Its older section preserves a rich Renaissance interior, including an altar, pulpit, baptismal font and patron’s gallery. The furnishings bring together several specific details that offer insight into the history of the church interior.

A burial chapel was added to the eastern side of the church in 1700. It contains the original, well-preserved Baroque sarcophagi of the founders Heinrich von Podewils, who died in 1696, and Adam von Podewils, who died in 1697. Heinrich’s sarcophagus is made of brass; Adam’s is made of marble and decorated with sculptures. The two sarcophagi thus differ both in material and design.

Trails by the lake and through the surrounding area

A report published by the forestry administration in 2025 describes clearly noticeable pedestrian activity observed around Lake Zamkowe in Krąg. Well-maintained nature trails leading to a second, entirely natural forest lake begin behind the buildings of Podewils Castle Hotel. In Krąg, the almost circular lake north of the castle and a forest lake at the end of the nature trails therefore offer two different kinds of lakeside experience.

The approximately 113-kilometre Captain Marek Roszczynialski Horse Trail passes through Krąg and connects Biały Bór, Drzewiany, Krąg, Polanów, Staniewice and Jarosławiec. A designated horse trail runs in the area around Krąg and Komorowo. A designated tourist trail connects Wielin, Buszyno, Krąg and Borkowo in the municipality of Malechowo; this sequence of places is another way to situate Krąg within a regional trail network.

Krąg offers two clear points of interest to help you choose the focus of your trip: the castle and church bring together historical architectural and interior details, while the trails by the water and the riding routes draw attention to outdoor activities and connections between places. Depending on which of these themes matters more to you, you can consider Krąg as a destination for cultural history or for exploring trails through the landscape.
