Słonecznik brings together historic buildings and practical opportunities for a cycling trip. Around the parish church of the Holy Cross, architectural history, a former cemetery and a memorial come together; at the same time, two different cycling routes pass through or start from the village. When planning, it is especially useful to distinguish between a ride in the direction of Wenecja and a 25-kilometre loop starting from Tarda.
Parish Church and Architectural History
The present-day parish church of the Holy Cross was built in 1735; its tower was added in 1836. The year 1836 refers to the church tower. Next to it stands a wooden bell tower with two bells; the church tower and the bell tower are two separate structures. The Church of the Holy Cross and the cemetery beside it have been listed in the register of monuments of the Narodowy Instytut Dziedzictwa since 1968.
A cemetery once surrounded the church; until the end of the 19th century, deceased members of the congregation were buried there. A preserved memorial beside the church commemorates members of the congregation who fell in the First World War. A rectory dating from the second half of the 19th century also stands next to the church. The different dates answer different questions: 1735 and 1836 date the church and its tower, burials continued until the end of the 19th century, and the register entry dates from 1968. The cemetery, memorial and rectory add earlier use, remembrance and another historic building to the architectural history.
Wooden Houses in the Village Landscape
Beyond its religious buildings, Słonecznik also has numerous preserved wooden houses. This places dated church architecture alongside a broader collection of wooden houses as two different scales of the village landscape. This can help you choose what interests you: you can explore the architectural history of a specific ensemble or focus on wooden construction in the village. The cultural highlights thus encompass both the individual historical connections around the church and the preserved housing stock.
Cycling: Direction and Loop
The blue cycling route continues from Słonecznik along a road in the direction of Wenecja. The 25 km circular cycling route runs from Tarda through Bartężek, Słonecznik, Prośno and Szeląg, then back to Tarda. On this loop, Słonecznik lies along the route, while the start and finish are in Tarda. The two options differ in form: the blue route points towards Wenecja, while the other is a 25 km loop. Check local route conditions before setting off.
When choosing a destination, you can weigh two interests against each other: should the trip focus mainly on architectural and local history, or should cycling plans carry more weight? Słonecznik combines historic details at the church and throughout the village with a route in the direction of Wenecja and a loop that passes through the village.
