Purda combines a rich church history with several marked trails. A Gothic brick church offers insight into the town’s architectural history, while red, green and blue trails include Purda in different ways. There is also the Kośna–Łyna water trail, where a historic Gothic church in Purda is one of the sights. To plan your trip, it is worth first choosing between a focus on culture, a marked trail or a water route: the route, distance and stated duration vary depending on which one you choose.

Church history and culture in Purda

Purda was one of the larger centres of Polish cultural life in Warmia. An important architectural landmark is the Gothic brick Church of the Holy Cross and St Michael the Archangel. It may have been built in the second half of the 15th century. It was later extended, and in 1580 Bishop Marcin Kromer consecrated the church. Side aisles were added in 1929.

A first wooden church must also have stood in Purda before 1419; it may have been built around 1400. This date remains a possibility.

A practical place to visit

The Gminna Biblioteka Publiczna is located at Purda 12. Its opening hours for readers are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Wednesday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. If you are planning a visit, check the opening hours before travelling, as they may change. This makes it easy to include a library visit as a separate activity alongside planning your church visit and routes.

Marked trails: compare routes and distances

The red-marked Trail II starts and ends in Purda and is 10 km long. The green-marked Trail 40, also known as Green II, runs from Marcinkowo via Purda and back to Marcinkowo. It follows forest and field tracks, is 22 km long and has a stated duration of 2 hours and 45 minutes. Before setting out, check the local trail signs and take conditions into account for Green Trail 40.

The blue-marked Trail 42 runs from Patryki via Purda to Giławy. Its stated distance is 13.5 km and its duration is 2 hours and 15 minutes. Of the three marked trails described, Red Trail II has the shortest stated distance and starts and ends in Purda. The other two routes differ in distance, duration and endpoints: the green trail returns to Marcinkowo, while the blue one runs from Patryki to Giławy. These details help distinguish the routes when planning your trip.

The Kośna–Łyna water trail

As a separate option for a trip on the water, the Kośna–Łyna water trail runs from Łajs via Lake Kośno, the Kośna River and several canals to Lake Silickie. Sights along the way include a historic Gothic church in Purda. This offers a way to explore the town’s history as part of a water route, while the marked trails offer different routes and distances.

For a stay in Purda, you can plan culture and routes as separate areas of focus: the church’s architectural history and the library’s opening hours offer practical points of reference for a visit to the town, while the marked trails and water route offer different route options. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your trip, these interests can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. You do not need to include all the routes mentioned in a single itinerary.
