Giže combines its location in the Ełk Lake District with historic buildings and the “Nad jezioro Krzywe” route. When planning your trip, it is worth considering these themes separately: the lakes and the village’s location provide geographical context, while the route connects several places and the traces of buildings and cemeteries offer a distinct historical perspective on Giže.
Location and orientation
Giže lies in the Ełk Lake District, north of Lakes Dworackie, Dudeckie, and Zajdy. The village is 11 km southwest of Olecko, on the road to Świętajno. This gives you several distinct points of reference: the lakes provide the geographical context, Olecko gives a specific distance and direction, and Świętajno indicates the direction of the road. Keeping these points distinct helps with planning, since the geographical region, the village’s location, and its connection to the road are not the same thing.
The “Nad jezioro Krzywe” route
The “Nad jezioro Krzywe” route is marked in green and red. It starts in Olecko, passes through Rosochackie to Giže, continues to Orzechówko and then returns to Giže. From there, it goes via Dworackie, Jurkowo, Krzywe, Dudki, Zajdy, and Kukowo back to Olecko. Giže therefore appears twice in an itinerary that starts and ends in Olecko. This is a different planning scale from a stay focused solely on the village: following the route means taking in several places, not just Giže. Check the current markings and route conditions before setting out.
Masonry buildings from two periods
Giže has examples of masonry buildings from two different periods. House No. 18 dates from the second half of the 19th century; houses No. 14, 16, and 17 date from the early 20th century. The house numbers help distinguish the building periods: No. 18 represents the earlier period, while the other three numbers represent the later one. These examples make it possible to identify two chronological reference points in the village’s history, rather than assigning the buildings broadly to a single period.
19th-century Evangelical cemeteries
Evangelical cemeteries dating from the 19th century are located at a crossroads and in the southern part of Giže; another Evangelical cemetery from this period lies west of the village. The historical traces therefore extend beyond the masonry buildings and also include religious burial sites. Their locations provide an additional spatial reference: some of these historic sites are within Giže, while another lies to the west.
Things to focus on during your stay
When choosing where to stay, you can weigh three points of interest: the location north of the lakes, the route linking several places and returning to Olecko, and the historic buildings and cemetery sites. If you are considering Giže as an overnight destination, tailor your search to the aspect that matters most for your stay, and check current offers.
