Around 1550, Dunajek Wielki was founded on forest land cleared from the Puszcza Borecka during the colonization of Prussia. At the same time, the local history reaches far beyond this founding period: archaeological traces and a burial mound cemetery with a specific date offer a glimpse into much earlier eras.
History Across Several Eras
In 1563, Dunajek Wielki is recorded as a rent-paying village under Kulm law. This entry supplements the approximate founding date with a different perspective: it describes the village’s legal and economic status. Together, the two dates show different aspects of local history without referring to the same historical period.
The archaeological traces in Dunajek Wielki span the Stone Age, Mesolithic and Iron Age, as well as the late Middle Ages and early modern period. Other finds are associated with the Migration Period and Roman influence. A burial mound cemetery is dated to the turn of the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. These dates can be distinguished from one another: the cemetery belongs to a considerably earlier period than the settlement’s founding around 1550, while the settlement traces span other eras.
The commemoration of the years 1914 to 1918 is also part of the history reflected in the local landscape. An obelisk and a memorial plaque stand in the old, neglected cemetery, commemorating residents who lost their lives during the hostilities of that time. The inscriptions are in German and Polish.
Forest Connections and Protected Landscapes
The Dunajek forest district lies on the edge of the Puszcza Borecka. Four nature reserves protect particularly attractive natural and scenic areas of this forest. The forest district’s specific location at the forest edge and the protection of areas within the Puszcza Borecka are thus two distinct aspects of the landscape.
