Location and Orientation
Wężówka is located in the northeastern part of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and in the Kraina Wielkich Jezior Mazurskich, the region of the Great Masurian Lakes. The village is 26 km southeast of Giżycko and 3.5 km southeast of Wydminy; it is also close to the border with Ełk County. Wydminy is the nearer of the two named reference points, while Giżycko lies farther southeast. The regional designation provides the broader context, while the distances locate Wężówka more precisely in relation to the two towns. When looking for accommodation, the destination can therefore be identified both by its region and by specific geographical reference points.
Historical Milestones in Wężówka
A precise historical reference point is the year 1475. Bernard von Balzhofen, Komtur of Pokarmin, granted Andrzej and Maciek five włóki of land on the Wężówka stream as service land. The event brings together a date, named individuals, a unit of measurement and a specific body of water; this provides a tangible early milestone in the village’s history.
In Wężówka, the brick houses numbered 5 and 6 date from the early 20th century; an Evangelical cemetery from the 19th century complements these later houses with an earlier point of reference.
Gawliki Małe in the Nearby Area
The Gawliki Małe estate was located near Wężówka. It was established in the 17th century from the Gębałek grange and the holdings of Maciej Szymon and Adam Drygalski, which together covered 27.5 włóki. The estate expanded later in the same century; historically, it had a mill and the right to serve drinks. Thus, the houses and cemetery in the village are complemented by a separate historical point of reference in the nearby area.
The land-area figures refer to different events: five włóki in the 1475 land grant, and 27.5 włóki as the total area of the holdings from which Gawliki Małe originated. Both figures therefore remain tied to their respective historical contexts.
Chronologically, the story spans the land grant of 1475, the 17th-century estate, the 19th-century cemetery and the houses from the early 20th century. The geographical references also differ: the houses and cemetery are in Wężówka, while Gawliki Małe is in the nearby area.
