Manasterzec lies in the valley of the Janicki Stream and partly in the San Valley, between the wooded Szałaszyska ridge and the foot of the Góry Słonne. Its landscape setting combines valley and highland features; the village is home to the Góra Sobień Nature Reserve and the ruins of Sobień Castle. At the same time, the history of the place name leads back to a former Basilian monastery. When planning a trip, you can explore nature and landscapes around Góra Sobień as well as local history spanning the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The village belongs to the municipality of Lesko.

Góra Sobień: Nature Trail and Castle Ruins

The Góra Sobień Nature Reserve is located in the village of Manasterzec in the municipality of Lesko. It covers 5.34 hectares and was established on 10 December 1970. Góra Sobień is a destination for walks and outings; the reserve has a nature trail called “Góra Sobień.” The ruins of Sobień Castle stand at the highest point of the hill, within the nature reserve and in the village of Manasterzec. The trail and castle ruins offer different points of interest: one focuses on natural history, the other on the history of the castle. This means you can find different ways to explore your interests within the same reserve.

In a notice about visits to the ruins, the Forestry Administration described wooden stairs and walkways as visitor infrastructure on 16 June 2026. The same notice mentioned new information boards about the history of the Kmita family in connection with the announced reopening of the historic “Sobień” nature trail. Check current information about access before your visit.

Monastery, Place Name, and Early History

Manasterzec was probably founded in 1433; its first written mention, in 1436, already identifies it as a noble village in the Sobień estates of the Kmita family. The date of its founding and its first mention therefore mark two distinct milestones in the village’s history. In the 18th century, a Basilian monastery stood on a hill between the upper end of the village and neighboring Bezmiechowa, and the settlement took its name from it. After the monastery was dissolved, the Church of the Dormition of the Holy Mary remained until 1875. The history thus runs from the village’s early status, through the origin of its name, to the later history of its church.

Historic Infrastructure along the Janicki Stream

The historic infrastructure includes the railway line from Zagórz to Krościenko, built in 1873. It runs near the church and includes a bridge over the Janicki Stream and a road leading to the village. The church and stream are therefore also part of the story of the area’s historic infrastructure. If you are considering traveling by train, check the current timetable.
