Palace, Science and Park
A neoclassical palace, a historic town square and hands-on science activities offer different ways to enjoy a stay in Wodzisław Śląski. Pałac Dietrichsteinów is one of the city’s most important historic monuments and the oldest neoclassical building in Poland. On its second floor is the Strefa Odkrywania, Wyobraźni i Aktywności. Its 18 exhibits offer a hands-on way to explore scientific phenomena and the laws of nature. In the workshop, activities and workshops involving construction and logical challenges complement the exhibits. The palace thus combines local heritage significance with a nationally distinctive architectural feature and hands-on science.
Right next to Pałac is Park Zamkowy, which offers space for walks and relaxation. The palace’s architecture and hands-on science are thus complemented by outdoor activities. Visitors who want to combine different interests during their stay can see this proximity as an opportunity to alternate between discovery and relaxation.
Historic Landmarks
The Rynek in Wodzisław Śląski has been the city’s central square since the 13th century. The Franciscan monastery complex was founded in the 15th century by Władysław, Duke of Opole and Racibórz. These two dates distinguish the square’s historic role from the later founding of the monastery complex. Together with the neoclassical architecture of Pałac, they offer different points of interest for a cultural and historical stay.
Kokoszyce: Villa, Chapel and Park
In Kokoszyce, a former early-20th-century villa stands beside the palace. It contains a chapel and forms part of the complex. Monumental trees and unusual plant species grow in the park of the palace and park complex. For more than 20 years, the complex has served as an archdiocesan retreat house. The chapel is part of the villa, while the retreat house is a use of the complex as a whole. In Kokoszyce, individual architectural features, the park’s plant life and the complex’s institutional use can therefore be seen side by side.
Leisure and Seasonal Activities
Baszta Rycerska has been extensively renovated and converted into an observation tower. The “Trzy Wzgórza” family leisure park has facilities for BMX racing, slopestyle, dirt jumping and pump track, as well as a skatepark. Baszta and the leisure park offer different attractions: the former focuses on the tower’s new function, while the latter offers a range of sports facilities.
The beach at the “Balaton” recreation centre is open during the season. Kayaks, pedal boats and SUP boards are also available to rent there. Rental arrangements for kayaks, pedal boats and SUP boards may vary by season; check the current conditions before your visit.
For SOWA, check the current visitor rules and workshop dates; for Baszta, it is worth checking the latest access rules. The beach at Balaton is open seasonally, and rental arrangements may vary. These activities do not all operate on the same schedule, so bear this in mind when planning a specific visit.
