A former ducal castle, a preserved medieval town plan and a 48-hectare park along the Pszczynka River reveal different sides of Pszczyna. The city is also home to a museum dedicated to the history of the press in Silesia and a wildlife enclosure where visitors can see European bison and other animals. For your trip, you can choose to focus on the history of the residence and the town, print culture, or the landscape and wildlife.
Castle Museum and Old Town
The Castle Museum is housed in a former ducal castle. About 80 percent of the original furnishings from around the turn of the 20th century have been preserved. The castle’s history therefore offers two perspectives: its earlier function as a ducal residence and its furnishings from around 1900. In the wider destination of Pszczyna, the Izba Telemanna displays historical musical instruments, including an 18th-century positive organ. Baroque concerts called “Wieczory u Telemanna” have been held in the Castle Museum’s Mirror Hall since 1979.
Pszczyna’s Old Town has preserved its traditional medieval town plan, with a spacious market square at its centre. Piastowska Street is one of several streets leading to the square and is the city’s main shopping street. The history of the town is therefore visible not only in a single building, but also in the layout of the centre and a street that leads to the market square.
Press History and the Industrial Monuments Route
The exhibition at the Muzeum Prasy Śląskiej traces the history of the press in Silesia from its beginnings to 1939. Its regional focus differs from the Castle Museum’s history of the ducal residence: the exhibition centres on the development of the press in Silesia. The Muzeum Prasy Śląskiej collection includes historic printing presses and printing equipment.
The museum is on the marked Szlak Zabytków Techniki. The route has more than thirty stops and is the only one of its kind in Poland to belong to the European Route of Industrial Heritage network. The Press Museum is therefore connected not only to its exhibition subject, but also to a wider route of industrial monuments.
Park and Wildlife Watching
Park Zamkowy covers 48 hectares along the Pszczynka River. Its size and riverside location make it a natural highlight, distinct from the buildings and exhibitions.
At the Pokazowa Zagroda Żubrów, visitors can see European bison, mouflons, red deer, fallow deer, roe deer and several bird species. The park and the wildlife enclosure therefore offer different ways to experience nature: the park is defined by its size and riverside setting, while the enclosure is known for the animal species that can be observed there.
