Łąka can be explored through two distinct themes: the wooden Church of St. Nicholas with its detached bell tower, and the reservoir with its bathing area and cycling route. The church’s details range from its year of construction to its bells and organs; at the water, the designated bathing facilities and the EuroVelo R4 cycling route help visitors find their way.

Wooden Church of St. Nicholas and Bell Tower

The wooden Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1660. Its detached bell tower has a post-and-beam structure: four massive corner posts are reinforced with diagonal braces and horizontal beams. This brings the specific construction method into focus alongside the year of construction. The tower is considered one of the most valuable monuments of wooden architecture in Silesia.

The church is on the “Silesian Wooden Architecture Trail.” This connects a clearly describable architectural detail with a regional architectural theme. Two details about the bells are worth noting: three bells hang in the detached bell tower; inside the church is a Gothic bell from the 15th century. Historic organs from 1865 complete the furnishings.

The dates refer to different elements: 1660 is the year the wooden church was built, the Gothic bell dates from the 15th century, and the organs are from 1865. The history of the place, therefore, cannot be reduced to a single era. Anyone interested in wooden architecture will find a specific construction feature in the bell tower; the bells and organs provide further historical reference points of their own.

Łąka Reservoir and EuroVelo R4 Cycling Route

The Łąka Reservoir was created by damming the Pszczynka River with an earth dam. The bathing area at the Ośrodek Sportów Wodnych in Łąka has a designated area for swimming in the water and a pier. This describes both how the reservoir was created and specific features of the bathing area.

The EuroVelo R4 cycling route passes through Łąka. The section described is 36 kilometres long. In Łąka, the route passes by the reservoir beach and continues along the paved Piotra-Skargi Street. These are two distinct points of reference for planning: the stated length of the section and its route through Łąka.

The local highlights have different focuses: the church is about construction and historic furnishings, while the reservoir is about the bathing area and cycling route.

Pszczyna as a wider destination

Within the wider destination of Pszczyna, the Historic Park offers a distinct landscape highlight. It covers 156 hectares and includes the Castle Park, Dworcowy Park and Dziką Promenada. The Pokazowa Zagroda Żubrów, a show reserve for European bison, is located in Dziką Promenada. Its ten hectares contain enclosures and paths from which visitors can also observe fallow deer, red deer, roe deer and pheasants.

Pszczyna’s cultural attractions also differ in theme from the local highlights in Łąka. The Castle Museum in Pszczyna is an example of a residence once inhabited by European nobility. Around 80 percent of the original furnishings from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries have been preserved. These details provide another historical reference point within the wider destination, without replacing the features of the wooden church in Łąka.
