A pilgrimage tradition dating back to 1947 and a landscape of hills, ponds and rock outcrops give Deutsch-Piekarn several distinct facets. In Piekary Śląskie, the men’s pilgrimage has taken place without interruption on the last Sunday in May since 1947. It brings together many men and young men. Culture and nature do not simply sit side by side here: historic sites tell the story of the pilgrimage site’s development, while viewpoints and landscape features direct the gaze towards the surrounding area.
Pilgrimage, Museum and History
The history of the Calvary begins on a specific date: on 31 December 1854, plans for a Calvary as a pilgrimage site were announced on Cerekwica Hill in Piekary Śląskie. Under parish priest Bernard Purkop, the project took concrete shape between 1862 and 1882. This makes it possible to trace the creation of the pilgrimage site through several stages over time, rather than reducing it to a single founding moment.
The Sanctuary Museum explores this religious history in three exhibition rooms. One is devoted to the history of Marian devotion and the image of Our Lady of Piekary. Another displays mementos of Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s presence in Piekary; the third presents selected exhibits from the Calvary chapels. The museum opened to pilgrims and parishioners on 12 September 2009.
The “Śląsk” Fortified Area defensive line is also part of the town’s history: one of its most interesting and oldest sections is located within Piekary Śląskie. Together with the Calvary, this military-historical connection offers another way to explore the city’s past.
Hills, Views and Natural Areas
Kocie Górki showcase the varied landscape of Piekary Śląskie. This landscape area includes numerous hills and elevations, small ponds and rock outcrops. On the plateau, scenic landforms meet cultural and natural values; these qualities offer potential for cycling and hiking tourism. Winna Góra in Kozłowa Góra, a district of Piekary Śląskie, offers a distinct view: from there, the panorama stretches across extensive farmland to the Świerklaniec Reservoir and neighbouring hill ranges.
Those interested in nature beyond its role as a scenic backdrop will find another point of interest in the vicinity of Piekary Śląskie. The protected Żabie Doły nature and landscape complex lies within Chorzów and Bytom, on the border with Piekary Śląskie. At least 129 bird species breed there, including at least 17 species that are rare in Upper Silesia.
Walks and Leisure
Kopiec Wyzwolenia combines landscape and recreation. Following major renovations in summer 2014, the hill gained a viewing telescope, a playground, walking paths and a mini fitness area. It became a place for walks and recreational outings for city residents. Individual facilities may change over time.
MOSiR Piekary Śląskie facilities include a swimming pool, an ice rink, tennis courts, multi-purpose sports courts, a skate park and playgrounds. In addition, its leisure sections offer activities for children, young people and adults, promoting interests, physical activity and a sense of community. Specific classes and activities may change. If you are planning a visit around a particular facility or leisure activity, it is best to check what is currently available in advance.
You can tailor your stay to different interests: the pilgrimage and museum offer insights into religious history, while Kocie Górki, Winna Góra and the nature areas provide different landscape experiences. Those looking for physical activity can make leisure facilities and walking opportunities a focus of their visit. For anyone looking for a hotel, Deutsch-Piekarn is a destination whose cultural and landscape facets can be explored independently of one another.
