The Jewish Heritage Trail runs in Żarki from the car park on Koziegłowska Street to the Old Market Square and can be completed on foot in about an hour and a half. Together with Stary Młyn, the market tradition and historic buildings, the town offers several specific points of interest for a stay. You can focus on Jewish history, crafts, architecture, market life or a longer hike.

Market life and Żareckie Jarmarki

Żareckie Jarmarki take place every Wednesday and Saturday in the centre of Żarki. More than 500 vendors set up their stalls across a 1.5-hectare market area. They sell local produce and food, as well as fruit and vegetables. The market tradition dates back to 1556. If you plan to visit the market, check the latest information in advance: market details may change.

Outside the winter season, Tatarczuch is available from Jadwiga Plesińska’s stall at the markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. This makes it a seasonal highlight of a market visit, not an offer available year-round. The regularly held Kupiecki Sąsiek at Żarecka Stodola offers another glimpse of regional products. There, you can listen to folk music, try Tatarczuch and other regional specialities, and buy produce and souvenirs. Check the exact event dates before your trip.

Exploring Żarki’s history on foot

The Jewish Heritage Trail links the Old Market Square and former town centre with a memorial site, a Jewish cemetery and the former synagogue, which is now used as a cultural centre. You can explore the trail independently using multimedia materials. Starting at the car park on Koziegłowska Street and ending at the Old Market Square gives the roughly one-and-a-half-hour walk a clear beginning and end. These details describe a town and heritage tour; the Żarecki Trail, by contrast, is a hiking route: it is 35 kilometres long, marked in yellow and passes through Żarki.

Stary Młyn: crafts in an old mill

The Stary Młyn Museum of Old Crafts is housed in a nearly century-old electric mill. During the exhibition visit and workshops, visitors can try their hand at small craft projects. This also makes the visit interesting for travellers who want to experience technical history through more than just objects on display. Since 1 January 2017, the Old Mill has been one of the sites on the Silesian Route of Industrial Monuments.

Advance reservations are required to visit Stary Młyn; guided tours start on the hour. As visiting arrangements may change, check the conditions in advance. This allows you to factor the reservation and scheduled tour start into your plans without assuming that you can visit without booking.

Market square, church and historic buildings

Żarki preserves a historic town layout with a trapezoidal Old Market Square. It is surrounded by Kościelna, Leśniowska, Berka Joselewicza and Piłsudskiego streets. The square is also the endpoint of the Jewish Heritage Trail and a useful landmark if you want to connect the town’s history with the trail’s listed stops.

The Church of Saints Simon and Jude Thaddeus is another notable historical site. It was built between 1518 and 1522; its founder was Marcin Myszkowski, Castellan of Wieluń. The historic granary complex, built from white Jurassic limestone and brick, is also part of the architectural heritage. The church, granaries and town layout each show a different aspect of Żarki’s architectural history; they are not a single attraction.

Which interests suit your stay?

For a shorter walk with historic stops, the Jewish Heritage Trail has an approximate walking time and can be explored independently using multimedia materials. Visitors especially interested in technology and crafts will find a different focus at Stary Młyn; advance reservations are part of the planning. Żareckie Jarmarki, meanwhile, centre on market activity and regional goods, while the 35-kilometre Żarecki Trail is an option for hikers. These different attractions help you choose what to do in Żarki according to your own interests, rather than assuming the same itinerary for every visit.
