There are several ways to explore Pyskowice: the medieval layout of the Old Town, the development of the railway junction, and the town’s location in the Drama Valley. If you would like to learn about historic urban spaces not only through their buildings but also through the town’s history, you will find several points of interest. The natural setting complements the cultural themes with the Drama River and the Dzierżno Małe Reservoir, which it feeds.
Old Town and Town Hall
The Old Town retains its medieval layout and includes the historic market square and the town hall. Most of the townhouses on the square are listed in the register of historic monuments. For a closer look at the town centre, it is worth considering these elements together: the historic layout, the square and the historic houses. The town hall has a dual role: it is part of the historic townscape and has housed exhibitions on the history of the town and the region since 2003.
Railway history in the exhibitions
At the Pyskowice Town Hall Exhibition Centre, the permanent exhibition “PYSKOWICE MIASTO”, which reopened in 2025, presents archival materials and memorabilia documenting the development of the town and its railway junction from 1945 to 2005. It can be visited during the centre’s opening hours; check the current hours before your visit. Two more permanent exhibitions at Stacja Kultury MOKiS Pyskowice offer their own perspectives. “STACJA PYSKOWICE I” displays photographs in publicly accessible spaces, providing a concise overview of the railway junction’s development. “STACJA PYSKOWICE II” is also set up in publicly accessible spaces and features exhibits and memorabilia from the Pyskowice roundhouse, models, and a faithfully reproduced five-chamber light signal. This signal was salvaged before the Drama sand railway station was dismantled. The “STACJA PYSKOWICE II” exhibition can be visited during opening hours or at special events. The difference in focus lies in the perspective: the town hall exhibition connects the development of the town and the railway from 1945 to 2005; the STACJA displays focus on a concise photographic history or specific railway exhibits.
Drama Valley and Town Park
Pyskowice lies in the picturesque valley of the Drama River, which feeds the artificial Dzierżno Małe Reservoir. Unlike the river and reservoir setting, the town park was created as a place to stroll among the greenery and sit in peace. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk stands at the entrance to the town park from the road to Gliwice. Here, a park designed for walks and quiet relaxation meets a specific religious landmark.
Surviving architectural landmarks
The history of the town’s architecture also takes concrete shape in its surviving details. The section from the main altar to the pulpit remains of the Gothic brick Church of St. Nicholas in Pyskowice. The restored Pyskowice milestone is displayed in a square opposite the former Hotel Germania, at 7 ul. Powstańców Śląskich. The two sites point to different historical traces: here, a surviving part of the church’s architecture; there, a restored milestone in the urban landscape.
