Witkowo combines a Protestant cemetery dating from the mid-19th century with archaeological settlements from much earlier periods. This gives the area a clear cultural and historical focus: settlements, cultural affiliations, and a cemetery with its own preservation characteristics exist side by side. If you choose a destination for its historical themes, Witkowo offers several specific points of reference across time rather than just a single picture of one era.

Archaeological Traces of Time

Several archaeological settlements from different periods are associated with Witkowo. Settlement AZP 6-31/77 is associated with Late Neolithic and Lusatian culture phases. AZP 6-31/78 is attributed to the Lusatian culture and the Early Middle Ages, from the mid-9th to the mid-10th century. At AZP 6-31/79, a Late Neolithic phase and a Late Medieval phase coincide. Another settlement, AZP 6-31/91, belongs to the Early Middle Ages. The different identifiers help distinguish these associations rather than grouping them into a single settlement or period.

For AZP 6-31/92, the period dates from the mid-9th to the mid-10th century. AZP 6-31/94 is associated with the period from the mid-10th to the mid-12th century. The two periods both begin around the middle of the 10th century and extend in different directions. This provides a specific chronological reference point among the earlier and later medieval phases associated with Witkowo.

Other archaeological associations add to the picture: a Bronze Age hoard of the Lusatian culture bears the identifier AZP 6-31/80. Several settlements—AZP 6-31/81, AZP 6-31/82, AZP 6-31/85, and AZP 6-31/87—are associated with the Lusatian-Pomeranian culture and the Early Middle Ages. There is also a burial ground associated with the Oksywie-Wielbark culture, listed as AZP 6-31/96, as well as the settlement “osada, st. 15.” Cultural affiliation, period, and settlement type vary from one association to another.

A Protestant Cemetery

The Protestant cemetery adds a different historical dimension. It is no longer in use and dates from the mid-19th century. No gravestones remain; about 30 percent of the tree cover is still present. The cemetery is listed in the heritage protection register. These features reflect different aspects of the same place: its use status, the absence of gravestones, and the remaining tree cover. In both its dating and its nature, the cemetery therefore differs from the archaeological settlements and the Bronze Age hoard.

Putting Witkowo in Context as a Destination

For planning your trip, the historical focus is clear: the archaeological themes differ in cultural affiliation and period, while the cemetery adds a different association dating to the 19th century. Witkowo is therefore an option for travelers who want to take historical context and cultural associations into account when planning their trip.
