Borowy Młyn combines early mill history with 19th-century buildings, as well as cycling and hiking routes. For planning your trip, you can separate two questions: Which aspects of local history interest you, and what kind of route suits your plans? The historical traces range from a mill settlement mentioned at an early date to a former manor; route information refers in some cases to total distances and in others to a point along the route.

Mill, Waterworks and Local History

In 1419, Borowy Młyn was first mentioned in documents as a mill with its own settlement, established under Magdeburg law. This early link between the mill’s function and the form of the settlement provides a clear starting point for the area’s history.

The mill building, which still stands today, was built at the end of the 19th century. The owner’s house at Borowy Młyn No. 3 was also built around this time and formed part of the former mill complex. The area’s history thus brings together an early documentary mention and a surviving building from the late 19th century.

A lock and a pond were also built in Borowy Młyn in the 19th century. They add the subject of waterworks to the area’s history.

The Manor and Traces of an Earlier Settlement

The former Jesuiterhof manor is also part of the area’s history: in the 17th century, Sztum starosta Jan Krasiński granted it to the Jesuits. An obelisk in Borowy Młyn commemorates a former smithy and inn; in the 17th or 18th century, the two formed the starting point of a settlement that no longer exists.

Understanding the Cycling and Hiking Routes

The Green Cycling Route in the municipality of Ryjewo is 44 kilometres long and passes through Borowy Młyn. Its surfaces include paved roads as well as forest and field tracks. The changing surfaces are a practical consideration when planning your ride; route conditions may change.

Borowy Młyn is also located at kilometre 308.5 of the 390-kilometre red hiking trail “Ku Gwiazdom – Śladami Mikołaja Kopernika”. Here, the kilometre figure marks the location along the full route, not the length of a local circular walk. The distances therefore refer to different things: 44 kilometres is the total length of the Green Cycling Route, while 308.5 marks Borowy Młyn’s position on the long hiking trail. Another route reaches Borowy Młyn at kilometre 19.50 and then continues along a forest road. Like kilometre 308.5, this figure marks a position on a route; by contrast, 44 and 390 kilometres are the total lengths of the Green Cycling Route and the red hiking trail.

Before setting out, check the current condition of the cycling route, as well as maintenance and trail markers on the hiking route, since these conditions may change.
