A latrine tower dating from 1384 is part of Kwidzyn Castle: the Gdanisko is described as unique in Europe. This unusual structure offers a fitting introduction to Marienwerder (Kwidzyn), where brick architecture, sacred art and trails along the Liwa reveal different sides of the town. Rather than focusing on just one attraction, you’ll find medieval buildings, an 18th-century palace, a historic equestrian complex and routes for walking, cycling or travelling on the water.

Cathedral, castle and an 18th-century palace

The cathedral and castle complex was built in the mid-14th century. The cathedral was constructed between 1310 and 1360 as a Gothic brick pseudo-basilica. A later chapter in the town’s history is represented by Fermor Palace, built between 1758 and 1763 for Russian governor General Wilhelm Fermor. This lets you compare medieval church and castle architecture with the distinctly later palace.

There are also several specific features to discover inside the cathedral: it includes the crypt of the Grand Masters and the Chapel of Blessed Dorota of Mątowy. A mosaic from 1380 depicts Saint John the Evangelist and a kneeling bishop. The cathedral and its crypt are accessible to wheelchair users if you notify staff of your needs at least one day before your visit.

The Castle Museum in Kwidzyn presents ethnographic collections relating to the material culture of the Dolne Powiśle region. For planning your visit, it is important to note the castle’s current status: it has been temporarily closed to visitors since the beginning of September 2026.

Further traces of the fortifications remain along Gdańska Street: irregular fragments of defensive walls made of brick and fieldstone lie between Górna and Batalionów Chłopskich streets. Here, history is not confined to the large cathedral and castle complex, but can also be found in individual parts of the townscape.

Miłosna: equestrian history and outdoor activities

Miłosna brings a different kind of history into view: the historic equestrian complex in Kwidzyn dates back to 1788. Miłosna offers riding lessons for children, teenagers and adults—from their first encounter with a horse to riding in the countryside. The outdoor hippodrome offers opportunities for riding, training and sports preparation throughout the year. There are also two modern, safe playgrounds on the grounds. Carriage, wagon and sleigh rides are also available; these depend on the season. Check current activities and access arrangements before your visit.

On foot, by bike and on the Liwa

The railway station is a convenient starting point for a walking tour: the route begins there, in the town centre on Kościuszki Street. Along the Liwa, there are riverside areas for walks as well as sports and tennis courts. You can treat a town walk and time by the river as separate ways to explore. The green-marked Napoleonic Hiking Trail also runs through Kwidzyn. Check its condition locally before planning your hike.

There is also a specific route to follow for a bike ride: a cycling trip runs from Kwidzyn railway station to Mareza, and the Dolina Dolnej Wisły cycle route passes through Kwidzyn. Mareza is a destination on the trip described, while Dolina Dolnej Wisły is the name of a cycle route that runs through Kwidzyn.

The Liwa is the starting point for kayaking trips. The “Przystań Kwidzyn” kayak rental offers numerous routes of varying difficulty; check its seasonal opening times in advance. A marked kayak trail runs along the Liwa, which flows through Kwidzyn. One specifically described route goes from Brokowo to Przystań Kwidzyn on Mickiewicz Street, next to the riverside recreation facilities. Water levels affect whether the route is navigable.
