The Church of St. Anne in Grabowo Koscierskie combines a long building history with preserved historical furnishings. Its origins as a chapel, its later role as a parish church, and its expansion date to different years. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for your stay, you can take this specific cultural attraction into account when choosing your destination and check travel arrangements separately for your own travel dates.

From Chapel to Parish Church

The present church building dates back to a chapel founded in 1631 and built by the Carthusians. In 1701, with the approval of Bishop S. Szembek, the chapel became a parish church. The two dates mark different stages: 1631, its origin as a chapel, and 1701, its change to a parish church. Side aisles were added to the church in 1952. This makes it possible to distinguish its origins from a later structural addition, rather than reducing the building’s history to a single year.

Architecture and Furnishings

The church is built of masonry and faces east; its chancel has a three-sided end, and the tower stands above the main entrance. “Facing east” describes the orientation of the building, while the three-sided end refers to the shape of the chancel. The tower, in turn, is identified by its position above the main entrance. Together, these features describe the building material, orientation, and individual architectural elements—distinct aspects of the architecture that cannot be reduced to a general description as a historic church.

The furnishings also span several periods. The furnishings dating from the time of the foundation included three late Renaissance altars, probably the work of Carthusian monks. Late Renaissance and Baroque furnishings have been preserved in the church. The main altar contains a painting of the Holy Family from the workshop of Herman Han; it is attributed to the school of the Gdańsk painter Hermann Han. A 18th-century Crucifixion sculpture has also been preserved. The authorship of the three altars remains explicitly uncertain, while the main altar painting is associated with both a workshop and a school.

Other Historical Points of Reference

Two cemeteries are also associated with specific years: the Roman Catholic cemetery dates from 1884, and the Evangelical cemetery dates from 1891 and is listed in the register of monuments. Their different dates and religious affiliations add further historical points of reference in the village to the church’s building and furnishing history.

Plan Your Journey and Accommodation

Bus route 860 is listed as the Gdańsk–Kościerzyna connection via Kolbudy and Przywidz. Grabowo Koscierskie appears in parentheses in the route sequence between Przywidz and Nowa Karczma. A notice dated 6 July 2026 also listed the village among the places covered by the summer public transport services of the Nowa Karczma municipality. This information applies to summer services. Check current operations and the timetable for your travel dates before setting out.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Grabowo Koscierskie, you can treat your interest in the church’s history and practical travel planning as separate considerations. The building and furnishing history helps identify a specific cultural theme for your stay; for your journey, what matters is which connection suits your travel dates.
