Widlino lies along the Radunia, between fields and forests in the Kashubian Lake District. An erratic boulder protected as a natural monument and two different routes give visitors specific points of interest. The Szlak Wzgórz Szymbarskich hiking trail passes through Widlino; the Żukowska Eska cycling route offers a turnoff to the Zaklęty Kamień. The options therefore differ both in how you travel and in how a local destination is incorporated into the route.
Landscape and erratic boulders
The protected erratic boulder in Widlino has a circumference of 17 metres, is 6.2 metres long, 4.5 metres wide and 1.10 metres high. These measurements describe different sides of the stone: circumference, length and width give its horizontal dimensions, while the height provides an additional measurement. The boulder lies on the path leading from plot No. 61 to the fields, 300 metres from the buildings. This describes its location in relation to a specific reference point, rather than simply stating that it is in Widlino.
When cycling, you can turn off the Żukowska Eska in Widlino and ride a few hundred metres to visit the Zaklęty Kamień. The so-called Diabelski Kamień is a different boulder: it stands near Widlino’s old cholera cemetery. The two names therefore refer to different local features—the Zaklęty Kamień is the destination of the cycling detour, while the Diabelski Kamień is located by reference to its proximity to the cemetery.
Hiking and cycling
The Szlak Wzgórz Szymbarskich passes through Widlino on the Łapino–Widlino–Sulmin section. Its current route goes through Sulmin, Niestępowo and Widlino because the pedestrian bridge over the Radunia is still missing. If you choose this hiking trail, the described route is an important point of reference: it includes several places and takes the missing bridge into account. This places the section through Widlino within a longer route, rather than treating the village only as the tour’s endpoint.
The Żukowska Eska is rated as a moderately difficult cycling route. The route as a whole runs along Kashubian gravel roads, field roads and forest roads; this information does not apply only to the section in Widlino. By contrast, the local detour to the Zaklęty Kamień is described as a few hundred metres long. These are two different kinds of information to consider when choosing a route: the rating and road surface refer to the cycling route, while the detour leads to a specific destination near Widlino. This helps distinguish the overall route from this local point of interest.
A historical reference
The first documented mention of Widlino dates to 1311. At that time, Karol z Trewiru granted the village knightly rights. This is a clear historical reference alongside the landscape features and present-day routes. If you are looking for a point of reference to the village’s history as well as trails and nature, the year and the granting of knightly rights offer a specific facet. Together with the old cholera cemetery, near which the Diabelski Kamień stands, the village’s history is also linked to a named place.
