Borowo is set amid wooded, wetland surroundings near the Borkowskie Lake District, and is known for its distinctive settlement history and church mosaics. Historic route connections and cycling route projects add to these local points of interest. In the wider travel destination of Kartuzy, culture and nature in Kartuzy add to the region’s diversity.
Woodland, Wetlands and Settlement Pattern
Borowo lies along a former route between Gdańsk and Kartuzy, amid wooded, wetland surroundings near the Borkowskie Lake District. Its historical connections with routes are also part of the local landscape: Borowo lay on a trade route to West Pomerania.
Borowo has a weakly developed linear settlement pattern. It emerged in the 20th century from an earlier settlement of farmsteads. Thus, the more recent development of the settlement pattern and a historical trading connection stand side by side—two different perspectives on the history of the place.
Church and Historical Timelines
The church in Borowo is sometimes called “Kashubian Ravenna” because of the beauty and scale of its mosaics.
An early historical milestone is the year 1209, when the Pomeranian princes Mestwin and Świętopełk donated the lands of Borowo to the Norbertine convent in Żukowo. A later institutional milestone was the establishment of the parish of Christ the King of the Universe in Borowo, effective January 10, 1982.
Cycling and Practical Planning
A cycling route has been established between Borkowo and Borowo. As part of the project, information boards and solar lamps were installed, and the existing tourist infrastructure was modernized. Check local conditions and signage before setting out on a cycling trip.
A pedestrian and cycling link between Borowo and Borkowo is being implemented in a landscape protection area and in the vicinity of the nature reserve and Special Protection Area “Jar Rzeki Raduni.” This setting provides the project with its natural context; check specific route conditions before planning your trip.
A playground opened on May 19, 2022, on the site of a former campsite, as a place for relaxation, leisure and children’s play. If you would like to include it in your plans today, check its current condition and access beforehand.
Kartuzy: Culture and Nature

The Gothic collegiate church dates from the 14th century, is one of Pomerania’s most valuable architectural monuments and is unique on a national scale. Its distinctive Baroque roof, shaped like a coffin lid, symbolizes the Carthusian monks’ monastic ideal of life through the words “memento mori” (“Remember death”).
The Franciszek Treder Kashubian Museum presents literature, material culture, language, as well as regional history and traditions. Its exhibits are displayed in eight galleries in the main building. They include Bazyli’s forge, the exhibition “Kaszubska współczesność z korzeni wyrasta” and temporary exhibitions.
The Arboretum Leśników Kartuskich is also located in Kartuzy, on the northwestern outskirts of the town. It covers 4.03 hectares of woodland managed for over 100 years, with 23 species and varieties of woody plants and more than 150 species of herbaceous plants and shrubs. A nature trail about 1 km long runs through the arboretum.
