In Conitz, the Brama Człuchowska rises as a six-storey historic building with a square floor plan in the Pomeranian Gothic style. Today, the gate houses exhibition rooms belonging to the Historical and Ethnographic Museum. Across five floors, the museum presents permanent and changing themed exhibitions; individual exhibitions may change. The gate is therefore both a distinctive building and a venue for changing museum themes.
City History in Buildings
The Historical and Ethnographic Museum is housed in six historic buildings along a preserved section of the medieval defensive walls. The historic old town offers further architectural landmarks: it includes historic townhouses, the market square, the Neo-Gothic town hall and a fountain. Together, these places offer insights into different aspects of the cityscape, without necessarily being viewed as a set walking route.
The churches also make their own distinctive impressions. The Church of the Beheading of John the Baptist was elevated to the rank of a minor basilica on March 11, 1993. The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary has three naves and a façade with two towers. Its interior is late Baroque and includes polychrome paintings by Franciszek Ksawery Haefflich. The Jesuits built the church and also founded a school in Chojnice. Those interested in sacred architecture can consider both the building’s layout and its specifically named artistic features.
Lakes, Trails and Routes
Zaborski Landscape Park lies in the northern part of Chojnice County and extends across the municipalities of Brusy, Chojnice and Konarzyny. The park includes 48 lakes, among them protected, exceptionally clear Lobelia lakes and charophyte lakes. A dense network of hiking, cycling and nature trails provides access to the lakes. Nature observation and getting active on the trails thus offer different ways to experience the landscape.
For cycling, Kaszubska Marszruta describes a system with around 200 kilometres of completed routes in Chojnice County. This is distinct from a 166-kilometre cycling route from Bydgoszcz to Chojnice, which passes through Rytel, Mylof, Drzewicz, Swornegacie and Bachorze. Another option on foot is the 55-kilometre Julian Rydzkowski Kashubian Hiking Trail: it runs from Chojnice via Chojniczki, Bachorze, Stara Piła, Męcikał and Giełdon to Wiele. The distances therefore refer to a cycling network in one case and individual routes in the other, with different modes of transport. For the hiking route, check current trail markings and local conditions; markings and surface conditions on the cycling route may change.
There is also a separate network of routes on the water: the Brda and its many tributaries—Chocina, Zbrzyca, Młosina and Kłonecznica—offer a variety of kayaking routes in Zaborski Landscape Park. Water conditions vary by season. At the Eksperymentarium, visitors can learn about the region’s history, nature and distinctive features through hands-on experiences and playful activities; exhibition content may evolve.
City Festival and Reasons to Visit
Dni Chojnic is an annual city festival held in TysiÄ…clecia Park and at Fosa Miejska. Dates and programme vary, so it is worth checking the festival dates for your planned visit. The festival, historic buildings and landscape routes offer different themes for a trip: you can focus on city history, explore the trails and lakes, or combine both with a look at regional activities.
