A landscape with many names

Góra Cisowa shows how much character a single landform can have: at 256.4 metres, it is an example of a terminal moraine. It is also called Sypana and Gulbineska, and its shape has earned it the name “Suwalska Fudżijama”.

The “Głazowisko Bachanowo nad Czarną Hańczą” reserve contains around 10,000 erratic boulders in an area of less than one hectare. They range in circumference from half a metre to eight metres. This brings together a large number of stones in a small area and a remarkable range of sizes.

Trails through Suwalski Landscape Park

For a longer hike, take the blue “Znad Szelmentu przez Park Krajobrazowy” trail: its 21-kilometre section in Suwalski Landscape Park is the park’s longest hiking trail. The six-kilometre “U źródeł Szeszupy” nature trail offers a different kind of route. It runs from Szeszupka to Łopuchowo through the park’s glacially shaped landscape.

The nature trail can also be experienced from a different perspective: people with special mobility needs can visit the entire six-kilometre route by car. This information refers to visiting by car, not to the time it takes to walk the trail.

Trails around Lake Hańcza also bring together nature and activity. The “Wokół rynnowego jeziora Hańcza” cycling route runs through Suwalski Landscape Park and around the ribbon lake. One route around the lake passes through the holiday village of Błaskowizna and by a beach with a pier and information boards. As beach facilities may be seasonal, check their current condition before your trip.

Wigry: Museum, church and boat trips

At the Muzeum Wigier in Stary Folwark, you can explore independently, with an audio guide, or as part of a guided tour. Educational activities are held there on weekdays throughout the year; the specific programme may be adjusted seasonally. Before your visit, check which formats and activities are currently available.

At the foot of Wigry Monastery is a landing stage for the “Tryton”, which regularly sails on Lake Wigry. Trips are seasonal, so check the timetable before travelling. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary at the Camaldolese monastery in Wigry serves the local parish community and many visitors. Its present condition dates to reconstruction following war damage, beginning in 1947.

Another religious tradition can be found in Wodziłki: there stands a historic wooden Old Believers’ house of prayer, known as a molenna. Inside are several icons, old books and crosses. The wooden building and its furnishings each give the molenna its own significance as a cultural and religious site.

Family destinations and winter activities

The “Dolina Przygód nad Szeszupą” in Rutka-Tartak offers children relaxation, play and the chance to learn about animals living in the Suwałki region. The “Opowieści Turtula” nature trail is also designed for families with children: they can follow animal tracks and, among other things, reach a maze with animal sculptures. The trail is located at the headquarters of Suwalski Landscape Park in Turtul.

In winter, the Wojewódzki Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji “Szelment” offers a snow-covered ski slope with runs 300 and 400 metres long. Winter sports and hiking trails thus add to the different ways of experiencing the landscape. Operating conditions may change; check the latest information before planning a winter visit.

The offices and tourist information centre of Suwalski Landscape Park are also located in Turtul. Alongside trails, natural sites and cultural attractions, visitors can find places to get tourist information.
