Discover Sokołów Podlaski through its historic routes and cultural landmarks. The Sokołowski Szlak Historyczny takes visitors through events from almost six centuries of the city’s history, with the help of 15 information boards. Another route starts at the former site of a church and leads to places with surviving Uniate churches. Along the way, you’ll encounter different themes: the history of the city and its residents, and the history of the Uniate churches.
Historic Routes and Their Themes
The Sokołowski Szlak Historyczny explores the past and dramatic periods in the life of the city and its residents. Its 15 information boards take visitors through events from almost six centuries of the city’s history, giving the route a focus on local history.
The Szlak Unitów Sokołowskich begins at Skwer Unitów Podlaskich, where their Orthodox church once stood. From there, it leads to places with surviving Uniate churches in Rogów, Szkopy, Sawice, Gródek, Seroczyn and Grodzisk. The routes differ in their focus: one centers on information boards about events in the city’s history, while the other has a named starting point and leads to places with surviving churches.
If you plan to follow either route, it is advisable to check the current condition of the Sokołowski Szlak Historyczny, as well as the route and trail markings of the Szlak Unitów Sokołowskich, in advance.
Cultural History at Stacja Sokołów
The Muzeum Wielkiego Gościńca Litewskiego „Stacja Sokołów“ presents the city’s heritage in the context of the history of the Szlak Wielkiego Gościńca Litewskiego. In 2022, the Stacja Sokołów tourist and cultural information point provided information about places of interest and events along this route. Also in 2022, visitors to the Stacja toured an exhibition and took part in calligraphy workshops. This connects cultural orientation along the route with another way to engage through exhibitions and calligraphy. If you would like to include these offerings in your plans, check in advance what will be taking place during your trip.
Historic Landmarks
In Sokołów Podlaski, there is a wooden wayside shrine with a folk-style figure of Saint John of Nepomuk, erected in 1806. The palace and park of Prince Michał Kleofas Ogiński also recall his ownership of Przeździatka, a district of Sokołów Podlaski, from 1788 to 1808. Here, a specific year of construction for the shrine contrasts with a clearly defined period of ownership.
The Muzeum-skansen on Lipowa Street offers another historical perspective. Founded and run for many years by Marian Pietrzak, it was an educational site for young people from Sokołów Podlaski, as well as visitors from Poland and abroad. Its former educational role complements the stories of the routes and landmarks with a look at cultural education.
These historical connections cover a range of themes: from events in the city’s history and church sites to Ogiński’s connection with Przeździatka and the former educational work of the Muzeum-skansen. You can therefore shape your trip around what interests you most: the city’s history, Uniate churches or cultural landmarks.
