Sierpc lies in the valley of the meandering Sierpienica River. Its history can be read in buildings from several centuries: the Church of Saints Vitus, Modestus and Crescentia is Sierpc’s oldest historic monument. Its oldest section probably dates from the first half of the 14th century. Other historic landmarks tell of later periods and a wide range of purposes. Together, they form a multifaceted picture of the city’s history rather than a single, uniform past.

Churches, market halls and a wooden house

Jatki Miejskie offers a different perspective. The Neogothic building was constructed in 1830 and served both as a market hall and as butcher stalls. Its dual purpose makes it a testament to urban commerce: it is not only about architectural style, but also about supplying a city and everyday life there. Kasztelanka, a historic wooden house in Sierpc, offers another contrast. It was probably built around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. These two buildings make it possible to compare how materials, periods and urban functions differed from those of the 1830 market halls.

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the monastery form an important historic complex; together, they are Sierpc’s largest historic architectural ensemble. Construction of the church began in 1483 during an epidemic, at the presumed site of an apparition of Mary to the cleric Andrzej of Sierpc. It was completed in 1488. Here, architectural history and religious tradition come together. In contrast to the market stalls and Kasztelanka, this complex is chiefly notable for its long construction history.

From a founding initiative to a museum

The history of the Muzeum Wsi Mazowieckiej w Sierpcu also goes back a long way: the Muzeum Etnograficzne was founded on 24 March 1971. The initiative came from folk carvers from Sierpc and the surrounding area, who were looking for a place to meet and exhibit their work. The present-day museum developed from this founding initiative at a later date. The distinction in time is significant: the Muzeum Etnograficzne’s history began in 1971, not under its present-day name. The museum’s founding also shows that the desire for a place to exchange ideas and exhibit work came from the carvers themselves.

The open-air museum and individual event dates

The open-air museum of the Muzeum Wsi Mazowieckiej w Sierpcu is about 4 km from Sierpc railway station. You can get there on foot, by bicycle or by taxi. To travel to Sierpc, you can take a public bus or a Koleje Mazowieckie train, or drive your own car. Check current connections before setting out. The distance from the station to the open-air museum is a separate leg to factor into your plans.

Some events in 2026 offer a glimpse of different sides of the open-air museum and the city. At Children’s Day on 7 June, children could play with replicas of rural toys and take part in pottery and weaving workshops. At “Wykopki w Skansenie” on 6 September, traditional potato-harvesting methods were demonstrated. For the “Sierpecki Smak” competition on 8 August at Osiedle Paderewskiego, tastings of dishes prepared by rural women’s associations and regional specialties were announced. The activities differed considerably: one focused on participation, another on a demonstration, and the competition on sampling regional food.

If you are planning a stay in Sierpc, you can weigh up your interests when deciding what to visit: the churches and historic buildings lead to different chapters of the city’s history, while the museum and open-air museum offer a distinct focus. The event dates provide concrete insight into some of the activities on offer in 2026; they do not indicate a recurring schedule. When choosing a holiday apartment in Sierpc, it may help to first consider which of these discoveries you want to shape your visit.
